what does the bible say?
The sword of the Spirit mentioned in Ephesians 6:17 is the last piece of armor Paul describes in talking about the armor of God and is the only offensive weapon depicted. Ephesians identifies the sword of the Spirit as the Word of God. The Bible identifies the Word of God as God's written Word, the incarnate Word (Jesus as Logos; see John 1:1–14), and His spoken word. The Bible teaches that Scripture, our salvation in Christ, and what the Holy Spirit reveals to us are the best offense in spiritual warfare (John 14:16–17, 26). The Bible testifies to its “God-breathed” authority (2 Timothy 3:16). Like Ephesians, Hebrews 4:12 uses the sword metaphor, identifying “the word of God” as “sharper than any two-edged sword” in helping us discern truth. The Bible also indicates the “word of God” as God’s spoken word, the power of which is shown in the Genesis account of creation (Genesis 1:3). Jesus, too, is referred to as the Word of God (John 1:14). Christ as the incarnate Word has conquered our enemy (Hebrews 2:14–15), which we learn through the Bible, God’s written Word. The Holy Spirit reveals the truth of God’s Word to us (1 Corinthians 2:11–16; 2 Timothy 1:13–14). He dwells in us and is our defender in spiritual warfare. With the sword of the Spirit, we have a weapon against the spiritual darkness around us.
