The description of Jesus having the name above all names is found in Philippians 2:9.
The "name above all names" signifies the unparalleled authority and honor bestowed upon Jesus. In the Bible, a name represents one's character and authority. In character, Jesus was the perfect Son of God (John 1:14). In authority, Jesus' name means Lord (Matthew 28:18; Philippians 2:11), affirming His divinity and sovereignty. Jesus sacrificed Himself so that we may receive forgiveness of sins (John 3:16). After this act of self-emptying on our behalf (Philippians 2:6-7), God honored Jesus and exalted Him by giving Him the name above all names.
Philippians 2:10-11 says: "so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Paul includes those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth—all heavenly, earthly, and demonic beings will bow before and acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord of all. Jesus is Lord over all the universe and all living beings, whether they choose to serve Him as their own Lord or not (Isaiah 45:23-24). He is the risen one, the Savior, our Lord. He is forever exalted above all. He has the name above all names.
Believers should not take this lightly. We must never use Jesus’ name in an unworthy way—e.g., as part of an expletive. And that isn’t about some magic formula in a word. It’s acknowledgment of Jesus’ status as Lord. So when a comedian starts joking about Jesus, turn the channel. When a coworker uses His name unworthily, don’t laugh or join the conversation. In fact, when we can, we should try to witness to those whose unworthy use of our Lord’s name shows they are lost. One day they will stand before the very One whose name they are misusing. We should warn them before it’s too late.
