what does the bible say?
Scripture uses “Son of God” to describe Jesus’ unique divine identity and mission. The Old Testament laid the foundation by promising a royal heir who would be God’s Son and reign forever (2 Samuel 7:14; Psalm 2:7). The New Testament shows the fulfillment: the eternal Word became flesh (John 1:1; John 1:14), and Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit so that He would be holy, the Son of God (Luke 1:35). He lived a sinless life, unlike Adam’s fallen line (Romans 5:12–19; Hebrews 4:15).
The Father identified Jesus as His beloved Son at His baptism (Matthew 3:17) and transfiguration (Matthew 17:5). Jesus claimed divine identity, which His opponents understood, as they accused Him of blasphemy (John 8:58–59; Matthew 26:63–66; John 19:7). The apostles taught that the Son is the radiance of God’s glory, the exact imprint of His nature (Hebrews 1:3), and the head of creation (Colossians 1:15–17). His resurrection declared Him to be the Son of God in power (Romans 1:3–4), and His exaltation ensures every knee will bow and every tongue confess Him as Lord (Philippians 2:10–11).
