The Four Spiritual Laws–a Gospel booklet written by Bill Bright–clearly outlines God’s plan to restore humanity through Jesus Christ. The Four Spiritual Laws describe four foundational spiritual truths found in the Bible, which are central to the Gospel.
The Four Spiritual Laws is the title of an outreach booklet created by Campus Crusade for Christ founder Dr. Bill Bright. Translated into numerous languages worldwide, it includes four important "laws" that can lead a person to faith in Christ, the basis of which are found in the Bible: (1) God’s perfect plan for humankind, which is seen in His perfect creation in Genesis 1 and 2; (2) Humankind’s rebellion and fall into sin, which is recounted in Genesis 3; (3) Christ’s sacrificial forgiveness for all sin. The first biblical reference to this is the protoevangelium (the first gospel) found in Genesis 3:15. Of course, Jesus’ crucifixion is depicted in all four Gospels and is the foundation of the New Testament ( 1 Corinthians 15:3; Romans 3:23-25) (4) Our response to the forgiveness Christ offers. This fourth point answers the question the Philippian jailer asked Paul: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30). “Believe in the Lord Jesus” was Paul’s response (Acts 16:31).
The Four Spiritual Laws present the Gospel in a clear, step-by-step way that reveals God’s love and purpose for humanity, the reality of our sin and separation from Him, and His plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. They remind us that faith—not effort—is the key to receiving God’s forgiveness and entering into a restored relationship with Him (Acts 16:31; Ephesians 2:8-9). This simple yet powerful framework continues to help believers share the good news with clarity and compassion, inviting others to experience the eternal life that only Christ can give.
God created mankind in a perfect world to live with Him and enjoy His presence. This is God’s permanent plan for humanity (Genesis 2:25).
Adam and Eve disobeyed God, choosing to define for themselves the difference between right and wrong. They desired to be the authors of their own destiny (Genesis 3:6). For this reason, they were spiritually and physically separated from God (Genesis 3:24).
In the middle of man’s rebellion, God kept His original plan and promised to send someone who would restore the perfect fellowship they once enjoyed in the garden (Genesis 3:15).
Throughout the Old Testament, God has provided various means of salvation involving an element of trust in His provision. These include the building of the ark by Noah (Genesis 6:13-22), the lamb’s blood of the Egyptian exodus (Exodus 12:12-13), and the serpent lifted up on a pole (Numbers 21:8-9).
Jesus is God and always has been. He was the Word through which everything was made in perfection (John 1:1-3).
The apostle Paul reinforces reality that Adam brought spiritual destruction upon all creation and caused the death of all mankind (Romans 5:12).
God’s plan and promise resulted in sending His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world in order to save it (John 3:16). Jesus gave His “life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45), and “bore our sins” on His body (1 Peter 2:24).
He who knew no sin became sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21) as a propitiation for our sins (1 John 2:2) as a fulfillment of the Old Covenant (Luke 24:27).
Jesus referenced the bronze serpent in the Old Testament as a foreshadowing of His impending crucifixion: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up” (John 3:14). Like that bronze serpent God told Moses to hold up, all who look to Christ must accept His salvation by faith (Ephesians 2:8-9).
If we believe in His sacrifice for our sin and confess Him as our Lord, we will be saved (Romans 10:9; Hebrews 7:25).
Whether we’re putting a toy together on Christmas Eve or watching YouTube to figure out how to change our own car oil, it helps to have a user’s manual or some type of guide to demonstrate how. For Christians, the Bible is our “how to” guide (and much more) for life. But even with that, in our time-crunched society, Christians who want to proclaim the Gospel may need to present its message more concisely if we want people to stop and listen. The Four Spiritual Laws booklet by Bill Bright might help in those circumstances. It asks, "What is blocking us from God's love? What is preventing us from having an abundant life?" and breaks down the Gospel message into four points that we can share in evangelism:
The first spiritual law is that "God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life," and we can expand on that with John 3:16 and 10:10.
The second spiritual law shows the problem blocking us from that plan: Our sin. Romans 3:23 and 6:23 reinforce that truth. What is the solution?
The third spiritual law answers by stating, "Jesus Christ is God's only provision for our sin. Through Jesus Christ, we can have our sins forgiven and restore a right relationship with God." Many passages of Scripture show this, including Romans 5:8, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, and John 14:6.
The fourth spiritual law presents how to receive this gift: "We must place our faith in Jesus Christ as Savior in order to receive the gift of salvation and know God's wonderful plan for our lives." John 1:12, Acts 16:31, and Ephesians 2:8-9 are some passages we can share to support that truth.
These help the believer to evangelize, but maybe you are on the other side of that conversation and do not yet believe in Christ. If so, are you willing to place your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior and receive this free gift of eternal life? If so, do it now. No special prayer is needed. Words will not save you. Only Jesus can save you. However, if you’re not sure how to start, the following prayer can help:
"Dear God, I realize I am a sinner separated from you. I can never reach heaven by my own good deeds. But you have made provision for my sin. Right now I place my faith in Jesus Christ as God's Son who died for my sins and rose from the dead to give me eternal life. Please forgive me of my sins and help me to live for you. Thank you for accepting me and giving me eternal life."
