Scripture doesn’t present a specific prayer of salvation. The Bible indicates that God sent Jesus because of His love for all people. Salvation leading to eternal life is through faith in Christ (John 3:16). No specific prayer is required for salvation, but believers can pray when they place their faith in Christ, as it is a form of confessing Him as Lord (Romans 10:9). Jesus is the only way to salvation (John 14:6; Acts 4:12), and those who believe and accept that, are saved. We cannot earn our salvation through reciting a prayer nor good works. Jesus’ work on the cross earned salvation for those who place their faith in Him (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Prayer itself is not a magic formula for salvation. In fact, Jesus criticized Gentiles who “heap up empty phrases . . . for they think that they will be heard for their many words” (Matthew 6:7-8). The sincerity and faith behind a prayer is what matters, not the act of praying.
John 3:16 indicates that “whoever believes in him [Jesus] should not perish but have eternal life." Salvation is based on belief, not a certain prayer.
Romans 10:9 expresses key factors involved for the person who wishes to receive salvation: "if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." This doesn’t suggest that specific words save. It implies that those who believe will confess that belief from an outpouring of their heart (cf. Matthew 10:32-33).
Many people have been told that to be saved, they must pray a prayer of salvation. However, the Bible does not teach that salvation takes place due to a certain prayer or even that it requires a prayer. Instead, salvation is based on God's grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Did you ever have a secret handshake? How about a code word? Kids love creating actions or phrases that only their inner circle knows. It’s what separates the special “club” of insiders from everyone else.
But thankfully, to become a “Christian,” no special words, phrases or even prayers are needed. Christ did the work for us, dying on the cross for our sins. Believing that saves us.
This isn’t to say that we shouldn’t pray. Prayer is an essential part of every believer’s life. But we shouldn’t treat it as a secret handshake or code word to salvation because doing makes salvation our work rather than Christ’s.
Are you willing to place your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior and receive this free gift of eternal life? If so, do it now. As stated, no special prayer is needed. But if you’re not sure where to start or how to express belief, sometimes it may help to pray, and this is an example:
"Dear God, I realize I am a sinner in need of salvation. I can never save myself by good deeds or through special knowledge. Only Jesus can save me. So right now I place my faith in Jesus Christ. I believe Him to be the Son of God, who died for my sins, and rose from the dead to give me eternal life. Please forgive me of my sins and help me to live for you. Thank you for accepting me and giving me eternal life."
