TL;DR:

Besides assurance of salvation, we can ease our fear of death by meditating on comforting truths in the Bible.

from the old testament

  • Psalm 23:4 reminds us that God is with us through our darkest moments, even in the face of death: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
  • In Isaiah 41:10, God calls us not to fear because He is our God and will strengthen us. Even in the midst of fearing death, we can remember who He is and where our strength comes from to face whatever comes our way.
  • Psalm 118:6-7 says, “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.” God helps those who trust in Him. God is greater even than death, and His presence comforts us during times of fear .

from the new testament

  • Jesus taught, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal" ( Matthew 6:19-20). Living a life without regrets involves using our gifts and resources to make an eternal impact.
  • Living without regrets also includes living a holy life in Christ and making disciples ( Matthew 28:18-20).
  • The greatest antidote to the fear of death is the assurance of everlasting life ( J o hn 3:16).
  • Christians’ death is temporary because of the promised resurrection; in fact, death is sometimes referred to as "sleep" in the New Testament ( John 11:11, 13; 1 Corinthians 11:30).
  • Because of Jesus, death has been defeated and has lost its "sting" ( 1 Corinthians 15:55).
  • For believers to be "away from the body" is to be "at home with the Lord" ( 2 Corinthians 5:8).
  • To enjoy eternity, we must receive Jesus Christ by faith ( Ephesians 2:8-9).
  • Paul wrote, "Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" ( Philippians 3:13-14). Fear of death is often associated with the disappointment of falling short of personal goals. We cannot change the past, but we can live today with full devotion to the Lord.
  • We who receive Christ by faith can gain confidence in our salvation as we grow in our spiritual walks. First John 5:13 says, "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life." Learning God's Word strengthens our faith and creates joy in us as we look forward to eternity with our Lord.

implications for today

It is natural to fear death . The topic of death brings to mind thoughts of pain, sadness, and separation from loved ones. However, the Bible’s wisdom about death can comfort us and lessen our anxieties. Philippians 4:6 makes clear that if we are anxious about something, we should bring our prayers to God. In fact, in Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus welcomes us to cast our burdens on Him. As we fix our eyes on the One who is sovereign over even death and remember that He is with us, loves us, and strengthens us, we can face the reality of death. Practically, some anxiety can be alleviated when we take care of the loved ones we will leave behind by preparing a legal will, making funeral arrangements, and buying life insurance . We can also do our part to steward our bodies well by maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, getting rest, and avoiding harmful activities like smoking; though death is inevitable, we’re called to be take care of the temple of the Holy Spirit (physical body) (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Ultimately, God is the one who has the power to take away our fear of death. Those of us who know Him can live with great anticipation for our afterlife in which we will forever be in His presence ( 1 Peter 1:8-9).
