This intermediary, known as a shaman, is believed to communicate with spirits to heal, protect, curse, guide, or explain misfortune. Shamans may also be called medicine men, spirit walkers, mediums, or witch doctors, depending on the culture. But the Bible teaches that God alone governs the spiritual and physical realms (Genesis 14:19; Psalm 103:19; Matthew 28:18). The Bible forbids seeking spiritual power or guidance through spirits or intermediaries (Deuteronomy 18:9–13). The New Testament teaches that believers rely on the Word of God (Hebrews 4:12), the power of the Holy Spirit rather than human techniques (1 Corinthians 2:4), and the Gospel as God’s power for salvation (Romans 1:16).

God repeatedly rejected ritual practices that bypassed obedience and faith, reminding His people that what He desired was faithfulness. Through Samuel, God condemned Saul for his disobedience (1 Samuel 15:22). God’s prophet Micah told God’s people, “what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8).

  • Shamanism teaches that people need a spiritual guide to navigate the unseen world. The New Testament, in contrast, indicates just one mediator between God and humanity: Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:5). He is the only way to God (John 14:6); any other path leads to eternal destruction (Matthew 7:13–14).
  • Shamanism assumes that human techniques are required to counter spiritual danger. However, Jesus has already defeated the powers of darkness and holds authority over every spiritual being (Colossians 2:13–15). God’s solution for our spiritual problems is not trying to appease various spiritual beings, but by trusting in the power of the Gospel (Romans 1:16), which teaches that Jesus appeased God’s wrath so that we can have eternal fellowship with Him.

Shamanistic practices often involve rituals intended to enter or manipulate the spiritual realm. These may include chanting, drumming, dancing, fasting, self-inflicted pain, hallucinogenic substances, sacred objects, or designated holy places. The goal is to gain some form of favor from spirits. Shamanism is frequently blended with other religious or spiritual systems and is sometimes referred to today as “neo-shamanism.”

Shamanism appeals to one’s fear. It teaches you that unseen forces control your life and that you need special knowledge or rituals to remain safe. Scripture, however, tells you that God is in control and that your life is not at the mercy of spirits. He rules over all things, and nothing in the spiritual realm operates outside His authority.

We do not need an intermediary to protect us from spiritual harm because God is in control. We are responsible to Him, and He demands that we be perfect like He is. We are not perfect, which means we are under His judgment. Rather than fearing unseen spirits, we are to fear God, who cannot be manipulated and who has promised to eternally destroy all sinners.

But here’s the great news: God mercifully sent His Son to take our punishment. Christ is the only intermediary we need. Jesus, being fully God and fully man, lived perfectly and willingly accepted the Father’s wrath. Those who repent of their sin, believe that Jesus is the only way of escape, and trust in His work on the cross are saved from God’s wrath and can look forward to eternity in paradise with Him.
