How can we do whatever we do as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23)?

TL;DR:

Whatever you do—big or small—can become an act of worship when done for God. Focusing on Christ, living with gratitude, and putting off the old self transforms everyday life into a testimony that glorifies Him.

from the old testament

  • King Hezekiah was successful by seeking God and acting wholeheartedly in every work he undertook in service of God's Temple (2 Chronicles 31:21). He modeled the type of wholehearted devotion all believers should have.

from the new testament

  • Paul wrote to believers in Colossae, "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ" (Colossians 3:23-24). All work, whether secular or sacred, is an opportunity to worship God and glorify Him before others.
  • In Paul's first letter to believers in Corinth, he discussed not using our Christian freedom to make a brother or sister stumble. He provides this guideline for our behaviors: " So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). Every action, whether significant or mundane, should be an act of worship and honor to God.
  • Our thoughts and desires should be focused on heavenly realities instead of earthly distractions (Colossians 3:2).
  • Whatever we do or say, we are called to do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father (Colossians 3:17). By doing this, we become a living testimony to the life-changing power of God.

implications for today

Jesus summarized the foundation of all commands: Love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and love others as ourself (Matthew 22:36-40). The whole "law" hinges on those two commands. This means that we are to submit everything, and every moment to Christ. It's not about creating a spiritual checklist. It's about a leading a life submitted to Christ.

This gives purpose to everything we do. We can work, raise children, take care of our home, lead a Bible study, have friendships, and more as unto the Lord. We do this by seeking to honor and reflect Him in all we do. We do this as we surrender our wills to His in all these areas. We do this by being good stewards of what He has given us and faithfully doing all things for Him, including with our attitudes, habits, thoughts, and actions.

Several things help prepare us to do all things as unto the Lord: prayer, being immersed in God's Word, and fellowship with other believers move our attention back to what matters. They give us perspective and remind us of our purpose in all we do. Our relationship with Christ is not about a set of rules—human minds could never make enough individual rules to cover every possible situation. Instead, a life submitted to Christ will generate a grateful heart and a godly, eternal perspective each day in everything we do. And doing this transforms our lives into testimonies that glorify Him and reflect Him to a world that desperately needs Him.

understand

  • We can do everything as unto the Lord by reflecting God's perspective and purposes in what we do.
  • Focusing on the eternal, having a grateful attitude, and putting off the old self while putting on the new self helps us glorify God in whatever we do.
  • We are to do everything for God's glory to please God, not people.

reflect

  • How are you seeking to glorify God in whatever you do?
  • How might focusing on eternal values change the way you approach routine tasks, responsibilities, and relationships?
  • Where in your life do you struggle to put off the old self and put on the new self, and how can you invite God to transform that area?

engage

  • How should surrender to Christ influence the way someone handles everyday work, family, or ministry responsibilities?
  • How does doing everything as unto the Lord change the purpose of what we do?
  • How can understanding that “everything we do can glorify God” reshape the way we approach service, leadership, and interactions with others?
