When God says that everything we do should be done for the glory of God, it means that God should not be merely a side note in our life but the priority. The Old and New Testaments teach the foundation of our lives—loving God (Deuteronomy 6:5; Matthew 22:37-38). In his letter to believers in Colossae and his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul spoke of this kind of devotion to God pervading our lives (Colossians 3:23; 1 Corinthians 10:31).
Chapter 3 of Colossians describes how to live heartily as unto the Lord. Verse 2 encourages believers to focus on God's kingdom and eternal values, rather than temporary, worldly concerns. Verses 5-9 list eleven negative characteristics to put off as contrasted with the positive characterics listed in verses 12-16 . Verse 17 summarizes by saying "do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus," and verse 23 echoes this principle. When we do everything for the Lord, our lives become a living testimony of His presence, power, and grace in the world.
Jesus summarized the foundation of all commands: Love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and love others as ourself (Matthew 22:36-40). The whole "law" hinges on those two commands. This means that we are to submit everything, and every moment to Christ. It's not about creating a spiritual checklist. It's about a leading a life submitted to Christ.
This gives purpose to everything we do. We can work, raise children, take care of our home, lead a Bible study, have friendships, and more as unto the Lord. We do this by seeking to honor and reflect Him in all we do. We do this as we surrender our wills to His in all these areas. We do this by being good stewards of what He has given us and faithfully doing all things for Him, including with our attitudes, habits, thoughts, and actions.
Several things help prepare us to do all things as unto the Lord: prayer, being immersed in God's Word, and fellowship with other believers move our attention back to what matters. They give us perspective and remind us of our purpose in all we do. Our relationship with Christ is not about a set of rules—human minds could never make enough individual rules to cover every possible situation. Instead, a life submitted to Christ will generate a grateful heart and a godly, eternal perspective each day in everything we do. And doing this transforms our lives into testimonies that glorify Him and reflect Him to a world that desperately needs Him.
