What does the Bible say about women's rights?

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

From creation to Christ’s ministry, the Bible consistently affirms the equal worth of men and women while recognizing their unique, God-given roles. In the Old Testament, God set His people apart from pagan cultures by protecting women through laws that upheld justice and dignity. Proverbs honors women as symbols of wisdom and portrays them as capable, industrious, and strong. Jesus further revealed God’s heart for women by welcoming them into His ministry, showing them compassion, and choosing them as the first witnesses of His resurrection. The New Testament declares that men and women are “one in Christ,” united in spiritual equality and purpose. While some have twisted Scripture to justify mistreatment, God’s design has always been for women to be honored and loved with Christlike care. True biblical equality celebrates partnership, respect, and the shared mission of men and women to glorify God together.

FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT

• Both men and women are created in the image of God so are intrinsically equal in worth to Him. God gave both of them the mandate to have dominion over the earth and to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:27-28). God’s perfect plan was for men and women to have unique roles yet be equals in all respects.
• When God created man, He said that it was not good for man to be alone (Genesis 2:18). Thus, He created the woman out of the man's side (Genesis 2:22). She was "bone of [his] bones and flesh of [his] flesh," but different in that she was created to be a necessary helper to the man, not a duplicate of him (Genesis 2:20-23).
• When God structured the Law He gave to Moses to distinguish the Israelites from the pagan cultures around them. One way He did this was by protecting women in all stages of life, including those who were orphans (Deuteronomy 27:19), widows (Exodus 22:22), and unmarried (Joshua 17:3-4).
• The Israelites had grown accustomed to certain social norms from living surrounded by pagans for hundreds of years. God used the Law to enact change within those norms, such as commanding the Israelites to not “pervert justice” against orphans (male or female) (Deuteronomy 27:19).
• While pagan nations did not value women, under the Law, God made provision for women to be protected, provided for, and granted fair treatment. Joshua 17:3-4) provides an example of unmarried women being protected by inheritance rights .
• In Proverbs, it is worth noting that instruction is personified as a female (Proverbs 4:13).
• Proverbs 31 describes an exemplary woman who is not just a wonderful wife and mother but also a smart business woman (Proverbs 31:16).

FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT

• Jesus gives us the clearest picture of how women should be treated, as He not only welcomed female followers into His circle of personal influence (Luke 8:1-3), but He also revealed Himself as the Christ to a woman first (John 4:7-29).
• Women were blessed to be the first to see the miracle of Jesus being alive after the resurrection (Matthew 28:1-10).
• Jesus stood out against other teachers of His time because he did not discriminate against women and actually welcomed them as eager followers (Luke 8:1-3).
• Society at the time overlooked and often mistreated women, but Jesus treated them with dignity and care; for example, He revealed Himself as the Christ to a scorned Samaritan woman (John 4:7-29).
• God made it clear in Galatians 3:28 that men and women are equal in Christ: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” But equality does not mean sameness. Men and women have inherently unique qualities, but are valued the same by our Lord and Savior.
• Ephesians 5:25 reveals God’s deep love for women and how He expects their husbands to reflect that same love toward them.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

God provides guidelines and examples throughout the Bible to show that He believes women and men are different from each other but equal in value to Him. Some people debate whether the Bible has caused women to be treated unfairly or has been a proponent of women's freedom and equality. Unfortunately, in many cultures, women have been treated as inferior to men, at times because people misinterpreted and misapplied from the Bible.

But according to what the Bible actually teaches, (1) God’s original design was for men and women to be equal in each others’ eyes but the fall upset this balance, (2) God personally sees men and women as equal in worth thought created uniquely and(3) as clearly laid out by God’s word, God desires for women to be treated with honor and agape love.

The equality of women in the Bible differs from the modern-day women's rights movement. That movement often takes anti-biblical stances like promoting abortion, devaluing women who prioritize family over career, and encouraging sexual activity outside of marriage. Simply put, God-given rights to women are not intended to be twisted in unbiblical ways. Instead, following God’s ways upholds the rights of women and restores the balance He intended from creation—where women are honored, protected, and valued as equal partners in reflecting His image. True biblical equality celebrates the unique strengths of both men and women, uniting them in purpose to serve God and one another in love.
