Should we try to change culture?

TL;DR

Changing culture is not our mission; following Jesus and making disciples is. As Christ transforms us, we are called to live as salt and light wherever God has placed us, and that faithful influence can transform the culture around us.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

The Bible calls God’s people to influence the world without becoming like it. From Israel’s call to bless the nations to Jesus’ command to be salt and light, God’s people were always meant to make a difference wherever He places them (Genesis 12:1–3; Matthew 5:13–16). But that influence begins not with charging to change society but with allowing God to transform us (Romans 12:2). As the gospel changes hearts, changed people can bring truth, justice, goodness, and compassion into their families, communities, workplaces, and culture (Galatians 6:10; 1 Peter 2:12). Christians should stand against evil and injustice rather than conforming to a culture that contradicts God, while still treating people with dignity and speaking the truth in love (Acts 5:29; Ephesians 4:15). Acts shows how dramatically the gospel can affect society when transformed people faithfully live for Christ, even without trying to seize cultural control (Acts 17:6; 19:19–27). We aren't called to win a culture war or build God’s kingdom through political or cultural power. We're called to make disciples and faithfully use the influence God has given us, trusting Jesus to build His Church and establish His kingdom (Matthew 28:19–20; Matthew 16:18).

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

So, should you try to change culture? Yes, but start by letting Christ change you. You are called to live like salt and light, seek the good of your community, stand up for the vulnerable, pursue justice, confront what is evil, serve others, and bring biblical truth into whatever sphere of influence God has given you. But your primary mission isn't to “win the culture war” or to make everyone around you live like a Christian—it is to make disciples of Jesus.

The order matters: changed hearts lead to changed lives, which lead to changed communities, which bring potential cultural change. Laws and politics can restrain evil or promote good, but they cannot do what only the gospel can do: transform the human heart.

So don't conform to culture, run from culture, or make cultural influence your idol. Instead, faithfully live for Christ right where God has placed you and use your voice, gifts, work, relationships, and opportunities to point others to Him. You don't have to change the whole culture—you just need to be faithful with the influence God has given you.
