What is the sword of the Spirit?
Quick answer
The sword of the Spirit in Ephesians 6:17 is identified as “the word of God.” The Bible identifies the Word of God as Scripture, God’s spoken word, and Jesus, the incarnate Word.
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
The sword of the Spirit mentioned in Ephesians 6:17 is the last piece of armor Paul describes in talking about the armor of God and is the only offensive weapon depicted. Ephesians identifies the sword of the Spirit as the Word of God. The Bible identifies the Word of God as God's written Word, the incarnate Word (Jesus as Logos; see John 1:1
–
14), and
His
spoken word. The Bible teaches that Scripture, our salvation in Christ, and what the Holy Spirit reveals to us are the best offense in spiritual warfare (John 14:16
–
17, 26).
The Bible testifies to its “God-breathed” authority (2 Timothy 3:16). Like Ephesians, Hebrews 4:12 uses the sword
metaphor, identifying “the word of God” as “sharper than any two-edged sword” in helping us discern truth. The Bible also indicates the “word of God” as God’s spoken word, the power of which is shown in the Genesis account of creation (Genesis 1:3). Jesus, too, is referred to as the Word of God (John 1:14). Christ as the incarnate Word has conquered our enemy (Hebrews 2:14
–
15), which we learn through the Bible, God’s written Word. The Holy Spirit reveals the truth of God’s Word to us (
1 Corinthians 2:11–16;
2 Timothy 1:13
–
14). He dwells in us and is our defender in spiritual warfare. With the sword of the Spirit, we have a weapon against the spiritual darkness around us.
FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
-
God created all things with His spoken word, as shown in Genesis 1:3: “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” What God wills, comes to pass. Nothing can defeat God’s word and His promise of salvation (Genesis 3:15).
-
In Ezekiel 36:27, Ezekiel prophesies about God’s gift of the Holy Spirit, which enables us to resist sin: “And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.” After Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension, He sent the Holy Spirit to indwell believers, fulfilling this prophecy.
-
The psalmist in Psalm 119:11 indicates that knowing God’s Word is a defense against the evil of sin: “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Knowing the truth of God’s Word provides us with the truth the Holy Spirit brings to mind when we’re faced with the temptation to sin.
FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT
-
In Ephesians 6:17, Paul offers this about standing firm in spiritual warfare: “and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” The Bible uses “the Word” to refer to Scripture, Jesus, and God’s spoken word. In spiritual warfare, the truth of Scripture, the salvation Christ provided us, and the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit provide us with what we need to stand firm (John 14:16–17, 26).
-
John 1:14 identifies Jesus as the “Word”: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
-
Because of Jesus' work on the cross, we know that ultimate victory belongs to God. Jesus as the incarnate Word has already defeated the enemy (Hebrews 2:14–15).
-
Today, God’s people have the indwelling Holy Spirit, whose power is manifested in our lives, so we can “speak the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:31).
-
Jesus tells us how the Holy Spirit works in our lives in John 16:7–10: “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.” The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and judgment, using God’s Word to reveal the truth to us.
-
Second Timothy 1:13–14 also tells us that the Holy Spirit gives us power and reveals truth to us. He equips us for spiritual warfare.
-
Paul points to Scripture as a defense against evil in 2 Timothy 3:16: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” When we know the truth, we are able to defend against Satan’s lies.
-
Jesus quoted Scripture during His desert temptation to combat Satan (Luke 4:1–13). Each time Satan tempted Jesus, He responded with the truth of Scripture.
IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY
How prepared are you for an attack? In today’s world, people use security tools to protect themselves. We might have an alarm system with cameras to safeguard our home. We might buy a firearm in case of a break-in. Some attach pepper spray to their keychains to protect against attacks while outside the home. But none of these can save us from our biggest threat: the “spiritual forces of evil” that Paul speaks of in Ephesians 6. Satan tries to keep us from God whether it is by tempting us, twisting Scripture, accusing us and leaving us in guilt and shame, or by causing us to question God’s character and goodness. But God has not left us defenseless. He has given us the tools we need to fight against Satan: the Bible, our eternal security in Christ, and the indwelling Holy Spirit. While He has given us what we need, we must deploy our spiritual security system. We must read and know God’s Word and pray for discernment through the Holy Spirit. We must rely on His strength to bring to mind the truth of His Word and the boldness to hold onto it in times of difficulty, distress, or temptation. With the sword of the Spirit, God’s Word, we have a weapon of defense against the spiritual darkness around us.
