WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

Jesus’ supremacy affirms that He is fully God, eternal, and present throughout all creation, holding authority over the universe, heavenly powers, and the church (Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3). His miracles, teachings, and resurrection demonstrate His divine power and confirm His ultimate authority over life and death (Isaiah 35:5-6; Matthew 11:25; John 2:11, 20:30-31) . As the Word made flesh, Jesus bridges God’s divinity and human experience, showing us who God is and how He interacts with His creation (John 1:14, 14:9). Scripture emphasizes that all things—thrones, dominions, rulers, and authorities—were created through Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16). His supremacy calls us to trust Him completely, acknowledging His role as Savior who paid for our sins and reconciles all things to God (Isaiah 53:5-6; Colossians 1:20). Worshiping and serving Jesus recognizes His unmatched power, holiness, and love, reflecting our response to His authority. Understanding His preeminence transforms our faith, guiding us to live under His rule and participate in His redemptive work in the world (2 Corinthians 5:18–20).

FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT

• God chose to create the universe for His own glory and enjoyment. His last act of creation was mankind (Genesis 1:27—2:1), whom He made in His own image. God is the Creator and Supreme Being—the One with all authority.
• Scripture states that God is eternal (without beginning or end) and has reigned as the ultimate authority since before the beginning of the universe (Psalm 93:2). As someone who is a person of the Holy Trinity, this power and authority is Jesus’ as well.

FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT

• John 1:1 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." The "Word" here refers to Jesus, who "became flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:14). Moreover, Jesus stated on more than one occasion that He was equal with God (John 5:17–18; 10:30; 17:5).
• Jesus proved His deity by rising from the dead three days after He was crucified on a cross for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Without His resurrection, the Christian faith would be dead. He is supreme over death (1 Corinthians 15:57).
• The church is officially under Jesus’ authority: "God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church" (Ephesians 1:22 NIV).
• In addition to being the Head of the church body (Colossians 1:18), Jesus is also supreme over creation (Colossians 1:15-16).
• Lastly, Jesus has heavenly jurisdiction over angels (Hebrews 1:7-8).

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

God is three Persons in one—the Trinity. Each member of the Trinity shares equally the role of Supreme Being. This includes the Son, the Second Person of the Trinity. Since Jesus is equal to God, He shares in God's supremacy over all of creation.

Knowing that Christ is supreme, we should trust Him as our Savior. As God, He paid the price for our sins through His sacrifice and resurrection. We can worship Him as our God—He created all things and rules in heaven. And we can give our lives to Him and serve Him as our Lord. His power, authority, holiness, and love are worthy of all our worship and eternal devotion.

This devotion is more than wearing a cross necklace or having a John 3:16 bumper sticker. It’s about leading a life where we shine the light of Christ to others. Maybe that means overlooking a coworker’s slight and still greeting her with a smile. It could mean striking up a conversation with someone in the grocery line, introducing the gospel into the conversation. Or it can even mean giving up your comfort or even your life to stand for Christ. Christ’s supremacy should be evident in our lives.
