What spiritual boundaries do we need in our lives?

TL;DR

We need spiritual boundaries to help guard against false doctrine, immoral conduct, and destructive relationships that pull us away from godliness, and idols. Spiritual boundaries can serve us well in our striving for purity, godliness, and truth.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

One of the most important areas of our life is the doctrines we live by. In a world filled with “teachings of demons” (1 Timothy 4:1), we must guard against false teachings as we are guided by biblical truth and the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17, 26; 16:13-15; Ephesians 4:14-15; 1 Timothy 4:7). Church leaders and God’s Word can make us more discerning about truth (Ephesians 4:11-12; 2 Timothy 2:15, 3:16-17; Psalm 119:33). Avoiding certain relationships and environments that we feel will lead us into temptation is a spiritually wise move (Psalm 1:1-2, 101:3; Proverbs 4:14-15). Rather than be in close relationships with those who draw us toward worldliness, we should grow with believers who encourage us in godliness (Proverbs 13:20; 22:24; 27:17; 1 Corinthians 15:33; 2 Corinthians 6:14). We should also steer clear of participating in that which is sinful (2 Corinthians 6:17), including what may lead us into idolatry (Exodus 20:3). God has given us all we need to protect ourselves against spiritual attack (Ephesians 6:10-20).

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

Boundaries bring clarity to property ownership, sports, and even school work. We put fences around all sorts of physical dangers such as swimming pools, high-voltage areas, and firing ranges. Boundaries are also important in our spiritual life. Spiritual boundaries protect us from false teaching and guide us to lead God-honoring lives.

Where do you need to set spiritual boundaries? Is it in the entertainment you pursue? The people you hang around? Your daily habits? Taking stock of the areas of our lives we need to set spiritual boundaries helps us avoid pitfalls and mature as Christians. Just as we set boundaries around the kind of and amount of food we eat to maximize our health, spiritual boundaries help us to maintain healthy souls and a thriving connection with God.
