The Spear of Destiny is the spear that pierced Jesus’ side, later surrounded by legend and claims of supernatural power. The Bible, however, is clear that destiny belongs to God alone—making the spear a footnote in history, not a source of power.
The Spear of Destiny is a name later given to the spear that pierced Jesus’ side after His death on the cross, an event recorded only once in Scripture. While legend and tradition—especially within Roman Catholic history—have elevated this spear into a relic believed to hold power over destiny, the Bible is silent about any ongoing significance or supernatural authority tied to it. The Bible gives account, in the Gospel of John, of the moment during the crucifixion in which Jesus’ side was pierced by a Roman soldier’s spear. The soldier pierced Jesus’ side after Jesus spoke His last, to ensure He was truly dead. This is the only time it is mentioned.
The Bible makes clear that destiny is not shaped by objects, relics, or human control but by God alone, who is sovereign over history and human lives. Fascination with the Spear of Destiny ultimately shifts attention away from what truly matters: not the weapon that pierced Christ, but the Savior who willingly gave His life. Rather than chasing legends, believers are called to fix their eyes on Jesus and live in response to His sacrifice and redeeming love.
According to myth, the Spear of Destiny was passed down through a line of kings, after being found during the Crusades. It was said to have given many powerful rulers their authority, plus the ability to control their own destiny. It is also sometimes called the "Holy Lance" and is considered a relic by the Roman Catholic Church. The spear that pierced Jesus' side was never mentioned again after the Roman soldier wielded it. The Bible has no information about any object of power like the supposed Spear of Destiny. Destiny is not controlled by any object or person but only by God Himself, who knows all things and predestines human lives (Romans 8:29; Ecclesiastes 3:11). There is a lot of speculation and study given to the Spear of Destiny, but in the end, it is at best simply an interesting legend, and at worst, a sad distraction from the beauty of the Savior whose side it is said to have pierced. Instead of focusing on whether the Spear of Destiny still exists, we should turn our attention to Jesus and let His sacrifice and love fill our minds and reflect from our lives.
