Is it sinful to have a sexual fetish?

TL;DR

Although it is not inherently sinful, a sexual fetish is a strong interest in a particular part of the body or sexual practice. Within marriage, it can be a healthy expression of intimacy if it respects one’s spouse and honors God’s design for sexuality.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

A sexual fetish is a strong interest in a particular part of the body or sexual practice and is not inherently sinful, but it can become sinful depending on the context and intent. Within marriage, it can be a healthy expression of intimacy when it honors God, respects one’s spouse, and does not become an obsession or idol (Genesis 2:24; Hebrews 13:4; Ephesians 5:21-33).

For unmarried individuals, sexual desires that lead to lust are sinful, as Jesus warns that lustful intent is already a violation of God’s law (Matthew 5:27-28). Believers are called to exercise self-control, pursue holiness, and honor God with their bodies (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5; Romans 6:19).

Sexuality is a gift designed to be cherished within marriage, and a fetish may either reflect that gift or distort it, depending on how it is approached. We must navigate desires in a way that glorifies God (Proverbs 11:6; James 1:2-5; Matthew 6:33).

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

Depending on the specific circumstances and the people involved, a sexual fetish may or may not be sinful. Proverbs 11:6 gives a warning that would apply to unhealthy sexual desires: "The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust." Our unhealthy sexual desires can take us captive. Instead, we are called to live a holy life and to serve God rather than to focus on any thought, action, or body part that would dishonor the Lord. Sex is a beautiful gift designed by God for marriage between a man and a woman. It is meant to be cherished and enjoyed. A fetish may be an acceptable way to experience that gift, or it may be a perversion of the gift. Seek His wisdom and His righteousness on the matter (James 1:2-5; Matthew 6:33).
