What does it mean that there is power in the name of Jesus?

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

In the Bible, a “name” often refers to a person’s authority, such that acting in someone’s name was to act with their approval or power. In the same way, the name of Jesus represents all that He is—the Son of God, Savior, and Lord over all creation.

Because of His obedience and sacrifice, God exalted Jesus’ name above every other name (Philippians 2:9–11). The apostles taught that salvation comes only through His name, meaning by believing in who He is (Acts 4:12). When believers pray “in Jesus’ name,” they are not adding a phrase to get what they want but acknowledging His authority and submitting their requests to His will (John 14:13–14).

The Bible never treats the name “Jesus” as a magical word. Its power rests entirely in the person of Christ Himself. Those who try to use His name without faith—like the sons of Sceva in Acts 19—find no power at all. But those who belong to Him share in His authority through the Holy Spirit. The strength they experience is not their own but the work of Jesus living in them.

FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT

• Although Jesus’ name is not in the Old Testament, it teaches that God’s name represents His character, presence, and authority, shown when God proclaims His own name to Moses as the revelation of His nature (Exodus 34:5–7) and when God’s name dwells in the temple as the place of His presence (1 Kings 8:29).
• God’s name carries real power to save and protect, expressed in statements like “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe” (Proverbs 18:10) and “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved” (Joel 2:32).
• God gives His name to His promised Messiah. Isaiah describes the coming king with divine titles (Isaiah 9:6) and says that God’s Servant bears His authority to bring justice, light, and salvation to the nations (Isaiah 42:1–4; 49:6).

FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT

• In biblical times, a person’s name represented their identity and authority. To act “in someone’s name” was to act on their behalf, with their approval and power. When Scripture speaks of the name of Jesus, it’s describing everything about who He is—His divine nature, His saving work, and His rightful rule. To know His name is to know the One who holds all authority in heaven and on earth.
• Because Jesus humbled Himself in obedience, even to death on a cross, God exalted Him and gave Him “the name that is above every name” (Philippians 2:9–11). His name is powerful because it belongs to the risen Son of God. His authority extends over every throne, power, and nation. Every person will one day bow before Him and confess that He alone is Lord. For those who trust Him now, that confession is not fear but joy.
• The apostles taught that salvation is found only in His name. Peter said, “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Jesus’ name—who He is and His authority—offers what no one else can: the assurance that our sins are forgiven and that we are reconciled to God. To call on His name in faith is to entrust ourselves entirely to His finished work on the cross and to the power of His resurrection.
• Jesus also invited His followers to pray in His name. He said, “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son” (John 14:13). Praying in Jesus’ name isn’t about using the right words to get prayer to work; it’s about coming to God based on Jesus’ authority and seeking what pleases Him. Because of His authority, believers have direct access to the Father and can pray with confidence that their requests are heard.
• It’s important to note that there is no literal power in saying the word “Jesus.” In Acts 19, the sons of Sceva tried to cast out demons “by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” The evil spirit replied that it recognized Jesus and Paul, but not them, and turned around to beat up the men for acting as if they had authority when they did not. Their failure demonstrates that invoking Jesus’ name apart from faith in Him has no power whatsoever. The authority of His name belongs only to those who truly know Him and are filled with His Spirit.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

The name of Jesus is powerful because of who He is. His name represents His character, His authority, and everything He has done to save sinners. When we speak of His name, we are talking about the One who was both fully God and fully man, who lived without sin, who died to bear the punishment we deserved, and who rose again to give life to all who trust Him. His name carries the full weight of His person and work—it is powerful because He truly is Lord over all.

To believe in Jesus’ name is to trust in Him personally. It means resting in His forgiveness, depending on His strength, and following His commands. When believers pray, serve, or suffer in His name, they do so knowing that He stands behind them with all His authority. His name gives confidence that God hears our prayers, that our salvation is secure, and that our lives have meaning and purpose. One day, every person will acknowledge that truth, but those who know Him now already live with the joy and assurance that come from belonging to the One whose name is above every name.
