What are some good ways to demonstrate appreciation to my pastor?

TL;DR

Showing appreciation to pastors is both biblical and practical. Simple acts of gratitude, consistent support, and honoring their service can turn their labor into joy and strengthen the church.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

Demonstrating appreciation to pastors is both a biblical responsibility and a practical way to support their ministry and leadership. That appreciation can range from encouraging words, thoughtful gifts, kind notes, tangible support for their family’s needs, and more. The Old Testament sets the groundwork for providing for spiritual leaders: The Mosaic Law required the Israelites to financially support the Levites as they were the spiritual leaders of the nation (Numbers 18:21-24; Deuteronomy 18:1-5). The New Testament teaches believers to financially support their pastor as he is working as a spiritual leader (1 Corinthians 9:3-14; 1 Timothy 5:17-18). Though Scripture does not teach blind obedience to leadership(Jesus criticized the spiritual leaders of His day for their hypocrisy), it does teach respect for those who are leading God’s people in truth; for instance, Aaron and Miriam were chastised by God for speaking against Moses (Deuteronomy 13:1-4; Numbers 12:6-8). As with all people, believers can appreciate their pastors through offering encouraging words (Proverbs 12:25, 16:24). Showing gratitude and demonstrating appreciation to pastors affirms their work and strengthens the church as a whole.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

A word of encouragement, a card, a dessert-food chain, a gift certificate for dry cleaning, gas, or a car wash—These small tokens can mean a lot to a pastor. They show him that the congregation cares. Pastors carry the privilege and the spiritual burden of leading God’s people (James 3:1). Like any one of us, he most likely must deal with the everyday problems of life—illness in the family (or himself), rising cost of living, and more. But while we can come to the pastor to work through these issues, the pastor likely has a much smaller pool to draw on to discuss his burdens. Even a small word of gratitude on the way out of church on Sunday can help bolster a pastor, encouraging him.

Many churches observe October as "Pastor Appreciation Month" to show their appreciation and encourage their pastors. It's as good a time as any to exhibit your appreciation, but giving this type of encouragement is beneficial all year round.

Perhaps the most encouragement for a pastor is if he knows that he is preaching the message with biblical clarity. The only way congregants will know that is to know the Bible so well that we can commend the pastor for “rightly handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).
