Natural theology – What is it?
TL;DR
: Natural theology tries to know God through creation and human reasoning alone, but sin distorts our minds and leaves us unable to grasp salvation. Only Scripture reveals God fully, showing us our need for Christ and the path to eternal life.
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
Natural theology attempts to understand God from creation and human reason alone. However, the Bible explains why this approach is limited and ultimately unreliable. Creation truly reveals that God exists and displays His power and majesty (Psalm 19:1–3, Psalm 104; Job 38–39; Romans 1:19–20), yet the human mind is incapable of rightly interpreting that revelation because of sin. Sin corrupts every part of us, including the mind (Genesis 6:5, 8:21; Romans 1:21, 28; 2 Corinthians 4:4). Known as the “noetic effect” of the fall, this means that human reasoning apart from God’s Word cannot arrive at a proper understanding of God.
Nature does not reveal the way of salvation. What is visible in creation is God’s existence, some of His attributes, and His wrath against sin, but only Scripture explains how sinners can be rescued from that wrath through Christ’s death and resurrection (Isaiah 53:4–6; Romans 10:13–17). Additionally, many truths revealed in Scripture are supernatural and cannot be discovered through observation or deduction.
Relying on reason apart from Scripture is dangerous, as human wisdom cannot reason its way to a proper knowledge of God (1 Corinthians 1:21). Indeed, because everyone’s heart is deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9), human reason will tend toward conclusions that affirm sin and a more accepting god (Proverbs 14:12).
FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
-
Creation truly reveals God, with the created world being a clear testimony to God’s power and majesty. Psalm 19:1–3 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” Likewise, Psalm 104 reflects on the ordered world—its seasons, food, creatures, and boundaries—as evidence of God’s wisdom and sustaining care. Even Job is confronted with creation as the revelation of God’s greatness, as the LORD pointed him to it to show His unmatched authority (Job 38–39). Creation is not silent about God; it openly proclaims His reality and His power.
-
Because of Adam’s rebellion, God cursed humanity. This encompassed every part of human life, including the inner life of the mind. Genesis 6:5 reveals that the result was that “every intention of the thoughts of his [humankind’s] heart was only evil continually.” Even after God destroyed the world with the flood, this inner corruption persisted. He said, “The intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth” (Genesis 8:21).
-
Jeremiah 17:9 likewise teaches that “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick.” In other words, fallen human beings cannot trust their own thought process because even their inner being (their “heart”) is exceptionally good at self-deceit. This inner corruption helps explain why Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Left to itself, the human mind does not bring men and women closer to God—it leads away from Him.
FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT
-
The New Testament agrees that creation truly reveals God, but it emphasizes that this revelation is primarily a display of His wrath against sin. Romans 1:18–20 explains that God’s “eternal power and divine nature” are clearly seen “in the things that have been made,” yet this revelation also exposes His anger toward those who “suppress the truth” (Romans 1:18). Creation shows that He exists, but it also testifies that humanity stands guilty before Him.
-
The Bible also teaches that the fall has corrupted the human mind so deeply that it cannot perceive God rightly. Romans 1:21 describes our thinking as “futile,” and Ephesians 4:17–18 teaches that the mind is darkened and ignorant because of sin. There, Paul said, “Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.” Notice he was teaching that their problem was not merely moral but also an intellectual and spiritual inability to see truth as it really is.
-
Because of this corruption, spiritual truth cannot even be understood without the work of the Holy Spirit. First Corinthians 2:14 says, “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” Apart from God giving someone sight, the gospel makes no sense to the fallen mind (cf. 1 Corinthians 1:22–25).
-
Not only are spiritual things not understood by those without the Holy Spirit, but core truths of salvation, such as the death and resurrection of Jesus, are supernatural events that human reason cannot fully comprehend. This is why Hebrews 11:6 says that “without faith it is impossible to please” God: reason alone cannot produce saving trust.
-
Human wisdom, when used apart from God’s Word, leads away from Him rather than toward Him. Paul said, “For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe” (1 Corinthians 1:21). In effect, God designed salvation in such a way as to boggle human wisdom!
IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY
Courtroom dramas are filled with exciting testimony of witnesses whom the lawyers pepper with questions to get to the truth. But in real life, not every testimony comes from the mouth of a human being. Creation testifies to the greatness of God. Its beauty, order, and power all point to the One who made it, leaving no doubt that He is worthy of honor and obedience.
But creation, for all its glory, does not tell you how to obey or how to be saved. God has given that knowledge in His Word. Scripture reveals His character, your sin, His promises, and salvation. Your escape from God’s anger against your sin is only found there.
Some use creation as the sum total of God’s revelation, often to avoid moral responsibility that comes from reading God’s revelation in Scripture. The Bible explains that every person has sinned against God and stands under His judgment. No amount of effort can remove your guilt or restore what sin has destroyed. This is why God sent His Son. Jesus lived without sin, took the judgment sinners deserve through His death, and rose again to give life to all who believe. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Believers today need to tell others about this unavoidable truth. Salvation comes through learning about Him in Scripture, repenting of sin, and trusting in Him.
