How can we decide what movies to watch, music to listen to, or video games to play?

TL;DR

We must evaluate whether what we watch, listen to, or play is shaping our minds toward what is true, good, and pleasing to God. Is it honoring to God and does it pull me to or from Christ? Asking those questions can help us decide what to do.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

A Christian’s approach to movies, music, and video games is not about strict rules but about wisely seeking God's guidance. God’s Word is sufficient for guiding life and training discernment even when it doesn’t directly address every situation (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Believers are called, therefore, to rely on God's Word to transform our minds so we can better discern God’s will in the media we consume (Romans 12:2). We are also called to fix our thoughts on what is true, pure, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8). If the media we consume is not these things, then it is not honoring to God and we should think twice.

Because the human heart is prone to sin and needs training in righteousness, we must actively evaluate whether media is strengthening godly desires or feeding sinful ones (Jeremiah 17:9; Hebrews 5:14). Everything we engage with should be measured by whether it glorifies God and builds others up rather than merely being “allowed” (1 Corinthians 10:31; 1 Corinthians 10:23). At the same time, since rules are not explicitly spelled out, we must recognize that not everyone will have the same convictions. Love for other believers should shape how we respond to others' choices. Likewise, we should willingly limit our freedom if our choices cause another to stumble (Romans 14:21). Discernment grows through practice, and ultimately, wise media choices are part of a larger process of sanctification, where we train our minds to choose what draws us closer to Christ rather than what pulls us away from Him.

The goal is not legalistic restriction but Spirit-led transformation: becoming people whose minds and hearts are renewed so that what we choose to watch, listen to, and play reflects what we treasure most. In every decision, big or small, we are invited to choose what reflects God and forms us into His likeness and to let go of what pulls our hearts elsewhere.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

If there’s one common thread about life as a Christian, it’s that the world is hard to navigate! The Bible was not intended to be a book of “dos and don’ts,” meaning it doesn’t describe what to do (or not do) in every possible situation. That is why questions about media consumption are answered in so many different ways, depending on which Christian one asks.

This article has given several guiding principles. They revolve around understanding sinful human nature and God's holiness. As believers, we are caught between the time of our salvation and the time when Jesus will return to destroy all sin. At that time, we will be like Him (1 John 3:2), including our ability to perfectly know how to live in every area of our lives. Until then, however, our goal must be to honor God in everything we do (1 Corinthians 10:31), knowing that we may fail and need to recalibrate our views as we mature.

One practical thought to help prepare for a question like this is that it is better to establish our biblically informed boundaries now, before reading a book, watching a movie, or playing a game. This is because we often encounter issues only in the middle of something. Making a decision then may prove difficult, particularly if the sin being portrayed is tempting, or we are already deeply committed to it. Therefore, it is best to start thinking now, with the help of Scripture, where lines should be drawn and what you should do depending on the material to avoid sinning. Preparing in advance will help you act quickly when the need arises!
