How can I avoid being left behind in the rapture?

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

Scripture describes the rapture as a future event when living believers are caught up to meet Christ in the sky, joining resurrected believers. They are also given a body suited for eternity (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17; 1 Corinthians 15:51–53).

The Bible teaches that a person belongs to Christ through faith in Him. Salvation comes from trusting that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, confessing Him as Lord, and believing in His resurrection (Romans 10:9–10). Those who believe receive eternal life as a gift from God, with the assurance that they are His (1 John 5:11–13).

Because life is short and uncertain, Scripture urges an immediate response. Delaying could lead to a hardened heart and missing the chance for salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2; Hebrews 3:7–8; James 4:13–14). The wise choice is to turn to Christ now, receive forgiveness and new life, and stay watchful and prepared for His return (1 Thessalonians 5:4–8).

FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT

• The rapture is not explicitly taught in the Old Testament.

FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT

• Paul taught about the rapture in his letters to the Thessalonians. He explained that “the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command… And the dead in Christ will rise first, and then we who are alive…will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air” (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17). This event is designed to bring comfort to believers, assuring them that both the living and the dead who belong to Christ will be gathered to Him.
• Notice that the key to not missing the rapture is to belong to Christ. “Salvation” is another way of saying “belong to Christ.” Salvation is a gift from God, obtained by trusting in His death, burial, and resurrection (Ephesians 2:8–9). Paul summarized that a genuine heart response to that gift is confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in His resurrection (Romans 10:9–10).
• Those who believe receive assurance of eternal life. John wrote that God has given believers this testimony: “whoever has the Son has life” (1 John 5:11–13). This confidence is grounded in God’s promise, allowing Christians to know they will be with Christ when He returns.
• The New Testament also emphasizes the urgency of believing. Paul said, “Now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). Other passages warn that life is brief, and the heart can become hardened with delay (Hebrews 3:7–8; James 4:13–14).
• In summary, no one who genuinely believes in Jesus will be left behind!

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

If you're wondering whether you'll be left behind, the good news from the Bible is simple: come to Christ in faith. Salvation is God’s gift, and it's yours through repenting—turning away from sin—and trusting that Jesus died for your sins and rose again. To repent means to change your heart and mind, leaning completely on Jesus' sacrifice for forgiveness. Confessing Jesus as Lord, from the heart, is the sign of genuine faith, and everyone who does so is saved and will be caught up with Jesus when He returns.

Don’t wait to make this decision. The Bible encourages us: “Now is the day of salvation,” because life is fleeting, and delaying can make your heart so hard that you will not repent. In short, waiting for another time is a dangerous gamble with eternity—trust Christ today!

For those who do, God promises assurance. First John 5:12 says, “whoever has the Son has life,” so you can be confident that you belong to Him and will be gathered to Him when He comes back. And after you’ve taken this step of faith, share the good news with your friends and family — so they too can join you in the air when Jesus returns!
