Since God hates human sacrifice, how is it that Jesus' sacrifice could be the payment for our sins?

TL;DR

God hates human sacrifice because every life is precious, yet Jesus, fully God and fully man, willingly offered Himself as a loving and voluntary sacrifice for our sins. Jesus’ death on the cross was an act of grace on behalf of humanity, providing salvation and eternal life to all who trust in Him.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

God clearly opposes human sacrifice because every life is precious (Deuteronomy 12:31; 18:10; Jeremiah 7:31). God’s hatred of human sacrifice reveals His desire to uphold those made in His image (Genesis 1:27) and shows His love and righteousness (Exodus 34:6-7; Psalm 145:17-18; John 3:16; 1 John 4:8-10). Jesus, fully God and fully man, offered Himself as a voluntary and loving sacrifice for our sins (John 10:17-18; Philippians 2:6-8). His death on the cross was temporary and purposeful, not a violation of human dignity and worth like human sacrifice is (John 1:1; John 10:18). Jesus’ voluntary sacrifice demonstrates God’s grace and provision for humanity to be saved from spiritual death (Ephesians 2:8-9). Through Jesus’ sacrifice, all who trust in Him receive salvation, eternal life, and the assurance of God’s unending love (1 Timothy 2:3-4; John 3:16; Titus 2:11).

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

God is opposed to human sacrifice and even states he "hates" it. Every life is precious to God, which is why He calls us to honor and protect life rather than offer it as a ritual or attempt to manipulate Him. Human sacrifice contradicts His nature of love, justice, and mercy, and it violates the dignity He gives to every person created in His image. God desires obedience from the heart, worship through faith, and righteousness expressed in how we treat others—not acts of violence or coercion.

Because every life is precious to God, He hates human sacrifice and also longs to save us from spiritual death (1 Timothy 2:3-4; 2 Peter 3:9; Titus 2:11; John 3:16; Ezekiel 18:23). For this reason, Jesus, fully God and fully man, came and willingly sacrificed Himself so He can provide salvation for all who trust in Him. Jesus sacrifice was an act of love that offers eternal life.
