Is it a sin to look at hentai/cartoon porn? What does the Bible say about hentai?

Quick answer

Feeding our lustful passions through hentai is a sin and hurts our witness for Christ. We can overcome all sinful addictions through the power of God living within us.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

Although the Bible does not specifically address hentai or pornography, it does have much to say about lust and sin. Hentai is a worldly form of sexually explicit entertainment that feeds our fleshly desires (1 John 2:16) and is therefore hurtful to us (1 Corinthians 6:12). Jesus makes it clear in Matthew 5:28 that lusting after someone in our heart is considered just as sinful as committing adultery. In 1 Corinthians 6:18, we are instructed to “flee” sexual morality. If we are God’s children, we should live in alignment with our new identity, taking into account our witness to others (Matthew 5:16).

If we indulge in sinful practices like hentai and then call others out on their sin, we are being hypocritical. Using hentai is something we can “put to death” (Colossians 3:5) by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9-11) as He sets Himself against our fleshly desires and leads us into righteousness (Galatians 5:16–18).1 As God’s adopted children, we should live “set apart” from this world, with involves rejecting our former sins (like lust) (1 Peter 1:14-16). Instead of watching hentai and letting it corrupt our minds, we should fill our mind with godly thoughts as described in Philippians 4:8.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

Hentai comes from the Japanese word for "perversion" and refers to cartoon-based pornography. Originating in Japan, hentai is the outgrowth of anime (Japanese-styled videos) and manga (Japanese comics) with the addition of explicit adult content. Hentai is intentionally designed to cause real men and women to think about sexual ideas in ways outside of God's design. Whether cartoon or not, the same motivation is targeted—human lust—which is a sin. Hentai, like other forms of pornography, must not be a personal choice for the Christian. It dishonors God, hurts one's own walk with God, diminishes one's witness for God, and can harm relationships with a current or future spouse and family members.
