In the end times, what is the period known as the great tribulation?

Quick answer

The Great Tribulation describes the second half of the tribulation, where intense suffering, judgment, and persecution precedes Christ’s return, marked by God's wrath on the earth and the rise of the Antichrist. Knowing what will happen in the Great Tribulation, we are called to turn to God for salvation and to help others do the same.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

The end times is a period of time during which Christ will return, God will defeat Satan and the ungodly powers on earth, the Father will crown Jesus as King over all the world, and God will destroy and rebuild the earth and heavens. The exact events and their order are debated across denominations and hermeneutical interpretations. According to a dispensational reading of the Bible, which we ascribe to, the end times consist of the rapture of the church, the seven-year tribulation, the Battle of Armageddon in which Satan and the demons are cast into the Abyss, the 1000-year reign of Christ, the release of Satan and the final battle, and the creation of the new heavens and new earth. The seven-year tribulation will culminate midway into what is known as the Great Tribulation, where the Antichrist, through Satan, will blaspheme God and bring destruction to God’s people. The Great Tribulation is also a time where God increases His judgments against a world that rejects Him. Knowing what will happen during the Great Tribulation, we are called to respond to God now, turning from our sins and trusting in Him for salvation, and to help others do the same before this time of Great Tribulation.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

The Great Tribulation will be horrific. Between the warring nations, the Antichrist grasping for power, and God's wrath against the world, it is not a time anyone will want to live through. For believers in Christ of the church age, we don't have to. The rapture, which will happen sometime before the tribulation begins, will take Christ-followers away from the earth and God's judgment. After the rapture, people will come to a saving knowledge of Christ. But before the rapture, we have the opportunity to make sure we never see the Great Tribulation and to tell others how they can miss it as well.
