Why won't being a good person get me to heaven?

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

No matter how good you try to be, your deeds cannot earn you a place in heaven because all humans are born with a sinful nature (Genesis 3; Psalm 51:5; Romans 3:23). The Bible shows that everyone falls short of God’s perfect standard, and even our best actions are like “filthy rags” before Him (Isaiah 64:6). Obedience alone cannot cleanse the heart or make us righteous, but God has made the way for us to get to heaven (John 14:6). Everyone who trusts in Jesus’ death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins will be saved and have the assurance of eternity in heaven (John 3:16). Salvation is a free gift of God’s grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ, not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Christ died for our sins “while we were still sinners,” offering Himself as the only way to eternal life (Romans 5:8). Trusting in Him alone, rather than our own efforts, brings forgiveness, restored relationship with God, and assurance of salvation. True freedom and hope come when we surrender self-reliance and cling to the mercy and sacrifice of Jesus.

FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT

• The Bible teaches that all human beings are sinners. From the very beginning, humanity’s rebellion against God is recorded in the story of Adam and Eve, who disobeyed God’s command and brought sin into the world (Genesis 3). This act of disobedience introduced a sinful nature that has been passed down to all people.
• Psalm 51:5 reflects this reality, where David acknowledges, “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.” This highlights the universal condition of sin from birth.
• Jeremiah 17:9 warns, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” showing the depth of human corruption.
• First Kings 8:46 reinforces this when Solomon states, “There is no one who does not sin.” Everyone falls short of God’s standards.
• Solomon acknowledges this again in Ecclesiastes 7:20: "Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins." Even one sin is enough to keep people from heaven unless they have placed their faith in Jesus Christ.
• The Old Testament also teaches that, because of our sinful nature, humans are incapable of doing truly good deeds that can earn favor with God. Isaiah 64:6 states, “All our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment,” showing that even our best actions fall short of God’s perfect standard.
• Similarly, Psalm 14:3 observes, “There is none who does good, not even one,” making it clear that no human can achieve righteousness through works alone.
• The law given through Moses highlighted this limitation: even as the Israelites sought to follow God’s commandments, they repeatedly sinned (Numbers 32:23; Deuteronomy 9:6-7). Our actions, no matter how well-intentioned, cannot earn salvation; only God’s mercy and redemption through His grace can restore our relationship with Him.

FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT

• Many believe that if they try hard in this life to do good, that God will accept them into heaven when they die. Yet the Bible makes clear that getting into heaven is not something we can accomplish in our own power. Ephesians 2:8-9 says , "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." Getting into heaven requires faith in Jesus Christ; our works are insufficient.
• Every person except Jesus has sinned. Romans 3:23 teaches, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Christ’s death and resurrection allowed those who believe in Him to be covered with His righteousness.
• The good news of the Bible is that, "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). He knew we would each fail, sin, and be unable to enter heaven apart from Him. He died in our place, offering Himself as “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6) that would allow us access to heaven by faith in Him.
• All who trust in Jesus for salvation will be saved (John 3:16; Acts 16:31; Romans 10:9).

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

Have you been trusting in your own efforts and goodness to receive eternal life? The truth is, no amount of good deeds can erase the sin in our hearts or earn favor with a holy God. Every person falls short, and our righteousness is like filthy rags apart from Him. Salvation comes only through faith in Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty for our sins on the cross and offers forgiveness freely to all who believe. By letting go of self-reliance and trusting fully in His mercy, we enter into a restored relationship with God and receive the gift of eternal life. Our hope is not in what we do but in what Christ has already accomplished. True freedom and assurance come when we surrender our efforts and cling to Him alone.

Today, you can place your faith in Jesus and know for certain you will have eternal life. No special prayer is needed. Salvation is not based on your works, but on God's grace. However, you can use the following prayer to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior:

"Dear God, I realize I am a sinner and could never reach heaven by my own good deeds. Only you have the power to save me. Right now I place my faith in Jesus Christ as God's Son who died for my sins and rose from the dead to give me eternal life. Please forgive me of my sins and help me to live for you. Thank you for accepting me and giving me eternal life."
