What does it take to be a good Christian?

Quick answer

The Christian life should not be centered on our own attempts at goodness. While there are things that we should aim to do, we must remember that we can’t, out of our own works, become good enough for God.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

Being a Christian is not about following a certain set of rules in order to be deemed “good”. However, our new life in Christ does involve being reconciled with God, which allows for His transformative work in our lives as well as the freedom to produce spiritually good fruit and to live for what is good. As new creations in Christ, we can do good things like spread the gospel, demonstrate God’s love to others, abide in Christ, and fellowship with other believers . We must remember that as children of God, we were created for good works that God has already prepared ahead of time for us to do. We must not be ineffective or unfruitful in our knowledge of Jesus but rather “...supplement (our) faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.” We should aim to put our faith in action not out of compulsion, but out of genuine love for God.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

The concept of a "good Christian" misses the point of what our life is all about. While there are steps of obedience we can take in our walk with God, we should not take these steps in an attempt to earn God’s grace or make Him love us. His grace has already been freely given to us and His love is already extended and permanent. Obedience to God’s Word should be done not out of obligation or in an attempt to be a “good Christian,” but simply out of a love for Him. It is not our own goodness that brings us to salvation, and neither is it our own goodness that keeps us saved (Ephesians 2:8–9). It is God’s work in our lives that produces transformation (Philippians 2:12–13). As His adopted sons and daughters, God is at work in our lives. We, in turn, should trust Him and seek to obey Him.
