What is the full armor of God?

Quick answer

The full armor of God is our spiritual defense against the enemy’s attacks—truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, God’s Word, and prayer. We can’t win the battle alone, but with God’s armor, we can’t lose.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

In his letter to the believers in Ephesus, the apostle Paul reveals that believers’ primary battles are spiritual, so our defense must also be spiritual (Ephesians 6:10–18). He writes that believers must “Put on the full armor of God” (Ephesians 6:11 [NIV]). The armor includes the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, footwear of the readiness of the gospel, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, sword of the Spirit (God’s Word), and prayer. Paul, like many in the early church, suffered tremendous physical persecution (Acts 14:9; 16:22–24; 21:27–36; 1 Corinthians 4:9–13), and he could withstand and even be content while undergoing it (Philippians 4:11) because he was equipped, spiritually. But spiritual attacks are much more threatening (Matthew 10:28). Our enemy wants to separate as many as possible from God. Believers must stand firm in the defenses God has provided.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

Alarm systems for home and car, insurance for health and goods, and even weapons in case of emergency—there’s no doubt that we do what we can to feel safe. But the biggest threat isn’t a thief or a flood or even a health emergency: It’s our spiritual well-being. Believers are warned that Satan “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

How might he do this? Maybe he whispers in your ear that the Bible is hard to understand, so just give up on reading it and scroll on your phone instead. Or maybe he causes dissension in your church, so much so that you stop going. Or maybe he tempts you with what he knows is your weakness.

We can’t win—if we try in our own strength. But we can’t lose—if we put on the armor God has given us for protection. Christians have all the resources we need to defeat the enemy.
