In what way is faithfulness a fruit of the Holy Spirit?

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

The Bible speaks of faithfulness as a characteristic of God and one of the fruits of the Spirit. Hebrews 11:1 defines faithfulness as “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” and commends many who were faithful. Faithfulness is listed among the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-24), and it grows within believers when they allow the Spirit to work in them. Faithfulness leads to trusting God, assured that He always has our best interests at heart, loves us, wants a relationship with us, is powerful enough to save us, and is working in us. Faith is listed in the armor of God (Ephesians 6:16) as a shield. If our shield of faith is strong enough to put out all the flaming arrows of the enemy, we are spiritually invulnerable (Ephesians 6:16). A faithful person knows God and trusts that He will fulfill His promises.

FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT

• Faithfulness is the quality of being steadfast, reliable, constant. Scripture shows that God is faithful: “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations” (Deuteronomy 7:9).
• Like the psalmist, believers can know that “all his [God’s] work is done in faithfulness” (Psalm 33:4).
• Believers are called to be faithful; love and faithfulness guide believers toward God and good standing with others (Proverbs 3:3-4)
• People can fail us, but God never will: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT

• Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” That chapter lists some faithful Old Testament figures, such as Abraham, Moses, David, and Samuel, among others.
• Jesus calmed a storm in the presence of His fearful disciples, asking them, “Have you still no faith?” (Mark 4:35-41). Even amid the storms in life, if we trust in Christ, He will carry us through.
• On many occasions, Jesus commended the faith people placed in Him (Luke 7:9; Matthew 9:22; Mark 7:29, 10:52).
• Paul wrote to Roman believers, “For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin” (Romans 14:23b).
• In Paul’s letter to believers in the region of Galatia, he mentions nine fruits of the Spirit, evidence of God’s work in our lives. Faithfulness is one of these (Galatians 5:22-23).
• Paul uses an armor metaphor to explain to believers in Ephesus how to withstand the schemes of the enemy. Faith is the shield of that armor: “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16).

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

God is faithful. This means He always keeps His promises and can be fully trusted in every circumstance. His faithfulness means that He remains steadfast in His character for He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. When we are saved, the Holy Spirit also produces faithfulness in believers as He transforms us into Christlikeness. His faithful character directly affects our lives. His faithfulness gives us assurance that we have nothing to fear as we wait for Him to fulfill His promises. We also grow in trust and believe that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He says He will do.

Faithfulness allows us to live by faith as we are called to do. Faith is the opponent of fear. Faithfulness is necessary when God's promises seem to completely contradict what we see. When God's ways are hidden from us, when evil strikes, when hardships come one right after another—that's when we need the Spirit to produce His fruit of faithfulness in us. Faith also gives us hope; a faithful person knows God and trusts that He will fulfill His promises—those things he hopes for but are still unseen. God has our best interests in mind, and His faithfulness to us allows us to live in assurance regardless of what comes our way, faithfully living for Him.
