Do angels play?
TL;DR
Angels are powerful ministering spirits used by God in many ways to aid in bringing about His will and plans. The Bible never suggests angels play, reminding us to focus on their purpose rather than projecting human traits onto them.
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
The Bible provides significant insight into the angelic world, yet nowhere does it indicate that angels play. Instead, angels are shown as created, powerful ministering spirits who carry out God’s will—worshiping before His throne (Ezekiel 1; 10; Revelation 5:11–12), delivering His messages (Daniel 9:20; Luke 1:19; Matthew 1:20), protecting and serving believers (Hebrews 1:14), and engaging in spiritual warfare (Daniel 10:13; Revelation 12:7). There are different categories of angels—archangels, cherubim, seraphim—with differing responsibilities such as some who praise the LORD God, some minister to humans, some are messengers, some are fierce warriors in the heavenly realm. Scripture also reveals moments of joy connected to God’s work (Luke 15:10; Job 38:7), yet never portrays angels engaging in casual or playful activity. While not everything about angels is revealed, what is clear is that their focus is entirely on serving God, making speculation about play unnecessary and secondary to what God has made known.
FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
- A multitude of angels worship and guard God’s heavenly throne (Ezekiel chapters 1 and 10).
- Some angels, like Michael, are warriors who battle against the evil, fallen angels (Daniel 8:15-26; 10:13; Revelation 12:7).
- Gabriel is one of the angels who communicated God's message to individuals like Daniel (Daniel 9:20ff).
- In 2 Kings 2:1-18 God reveals an angelic world of fiery chariots to Elijah, which appear to escort him to heaven.
FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT
- Although it does not say it is the angels who experience joy, Luke 15:10 says, "Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Also Job 38:7 references sons of God shouting for joy.
- Some angels guard those who will inherit salvation (Hebrews 1:14), indicating their may be guardian angels.
- Jesus' mother Mary, and Joseph, each received messages from angels. Gabriel specifically spoke to Mary to announce Jesus' birth (Luke 1:19; Matthew 1:20).
- Revelation 5:11-12 describes an innumerable number of angels worshiping around God's throne crying "Holy, holy, holy."
- Some angels who fell from heaven due to rebellion against God are bound in chains awaiting their final doom in the Lake of Fire (Revelation 20).
- Although they are powerful, angels reject worship (Revelation 22:8-9).
IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY
One of the problems today is that people have a misunderstanding of Scripture. It is often thought that when Christians die they become angels; this idea is not in alignment with Bible teaching. Angels are often illustrated with cute little cherub bodies or pleasant happy faces when, in fact, angels are powerful, and sometimes fierce, beings. The study of the angelic world is a major systematic topic, and if it is studied in depth, the student of God's Word will not find any reason to think angels play. God created these beings to participate in His heavenly and earthly plans, for His purposes. They answer directly to Him. Those who have fallen from their original purpose such as Lucifer, are only interested in thwarting God's plans. Perhaps because we think that maybe the heavenly beings are like us we assume they behave as we do, but this is not their purpose.
UNDERSTAND
- The angelic world is structured into several categories of spiritual beings such as archangels, cherubim and seraphim.
- Angels have various and important jobs to do before the throne of God and around both the spirit and the physical worlds.
- There is no biblical indication that angels ever indulge in playful activities.
REFLECT
- What informs your understanding of the purpose and descriptions of beings in the angelic world?
- When you realize the importance of angels ministering before and around the throne of God, how do you see your relationship with them?
- How does knowing that angels minister to humans and are able to bring messages to us encourage you to learn more about them?
ENGAGE
- How can we help others get a greater vision of the angelic world?
- Why is it important to engage others in a solid study of the biblical teachings of angels?
- How does picturing angels as playful cherubs lower our vision and expectation of what they actually do?
