Do we need to believe in faith alone for salvation to be saved?
TL;DR
Being saved is not about perfectly mastering a theological phrase but about placing true, trusting faith in Jesus Christ as the only Savior who fully paid for sin. So yes, whoever rests in Him alone—not in their works—receives salvation, even if their understanding is still growing.
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
Salvation is not based on mastering theological wording but on trusting fully in Jesus Christ as the only Savior who has completely paid for sin (John 19:30; Acts 16:31). Scripture consistently teaches that we are saved by grace through faith, not by works, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:8–9). God makes clear that human righteousness falls short and that He looks beyond outward actions to the heart (Isaiah 64:6; 1 Samuel 16:7). Jesus alone is declared the only name by which we must be saved, showing the exclusivity and sufficiency of His work (Acts 4:12). Attempts to add works to salvation undermine the completeness of Christ’s sacrifice and shift confidence away from Him (Galatians 2:21). Yet true faith in Christ never remains alone, as it naturally leads to a transformed life of good works prepared by God (Ephesians 2:10). Therefore, salvation belongs to all who rest entirely in Jesus alone by faith alone, even as their understanding and growth in that truth continues.
FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
- The prophet Isaiah tells us our good deeds are not good enough to merit God's favor. "We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away (Isaiah 64:6)."
- Samuel tells us how God sees us. 1 Samuel 16:7b: “For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”
FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT
- Acts 4:12 tells is emphatically, "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Only the Name of Jesus the Christ will save us.
- Our works do not save us; we are made right with God through our faith alone. Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
- Our faith produces works and demonstrates our salvation, but do not save us. Ephesians 2:10 "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
- Philippians chapter two tells us that Christ, being in the form of God, became a man to die for us (Philippians 2:5-11).
- In Romans 3:21-31 Paul emphasizes that it is not by the works of the Law that we become justified before God, it is only by faith—faith alone.
IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY
If we think we can rely in some way upon our works to save us, how would we know if we ever did enough? We would never know, and our lives would be filled with doubt and fear. Who sets the standard for good works? God, alone, sets the standard, and the standard is perfection. That is why we should not and cannot even begin to think we can out-perform the perfection of Christ. It is not the amount of faith that we have that saves, but faith in the One who paid the price—Jesus Christ the Lord. If the God of creation would step out His heavenly throne room to die for you and me, what makes us think we can do better than that? Our faith must be only in Him and nothing we can do. Trusting Christ as Lord by faith is essential to salvation.
UNDERSTAND
- Our good works are not good enough to provide a means of salvation.
- Only the finished work of Christ on the cross will make us right before God.
- Faith in Jesus alone saves us, not our own works.
REFLECT
- What have you been relying upon to bring you to a right standing before the LORD God?
- How does it change the way you see Jesus when you realize His sacrifice is completely sufficient for your salvation?
- In what areas of your life do you struggle to rest fully in faith rather than trying to “earn” God’s approval?
ENGAGE
- How would you explain to someone that salvation is received by faith alone?
- What place do works have in our lives if they do not save us?
- How should we respond to those who say they hope they are good enough to get to heaven?
