Is baby dedication biblical? What is child / baby dedication?

TL;DR

Baby dedication isn’t commanded in Scripture, but it’s a way for parents to publicly commit their child to God’s care and promise to raise them in His ways. Baby dedication is a voluntary act of gratitude and faith, not a sacrament or substitute for believer’s baptism.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

Scripture does not prescribe a formal ceremony for dedicating infants, and the New Testament provides no instructions for baby dedications. Yet the Bible reveals that children belong to the Lord and that parents bear responsibility to raise them in His ways. Hannah vowed to give her son to the Lord’s service and later presented Samuel to Him (1 Samuel 1:11, 27–28). Under the Mosaic law, firstborn sons were consecrated to the Lord and redeemed by sacrifice, symbolizing that every child ultimately belongs to Him (Exodus 13:2; Numbers 18:15–16; Luke 2:22–24).

God’s design for families included teaching His commands diligently and guiding their children toward wisdom and obedience (Deuteronomy 6:4–7; Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:21). Because children are a heritage from the Lord (Psalm 127:3), many Christian parents publicly dedicate their babies to Him. Dedications became common when churches began rejecting infant baptism while still wanting a way to celebrate new life and commit to biblical parenting. A dedication is not a sacrament but a voluntary act of gratitude and dependence on God to help parents raise their children for His glory.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

Parenting is one of the greatest joys and responsibilities God can give. The Bible’s focus is on parents' daily call to love, teach, and model faith for their child. That is, God entrusts parents with the sacred task of organizing their home and life around scriptural truth so that they will come to know Him. As a parent, your goal is to help your child come to know Jesus, to see in you a living example of grace, prayer, patience, and trust in God.

A baby dedication is not required, but many parents choose it as a way to publicly thank God for their child and to promise before Him and their church family to raise that child according to His Word. If you decide to participate in a dedication, treat it as more than a joyful occasion—it is a sincere commitment. You are declaring that, with God’s help, you will honor Him in your parenting, teaching your child to love and follow the Lord.

Whether or not you publicly dedicate your child, remember that God does not expect perfection; He calls for faithfulness. As you lean on Him, He will equip you to provide a loving, biblically grounded environment where your child can grow to know and trust in Christ.
