What makes Jesus different from other religious leaders?

TL;DR

Jesus stands apart from other religious leaders because He is fully God and fully human and is fully alive even though He was crucified. Jesus’ life, teachings, and fulfillment of prophecy set Him apart, offering hope, forgiveness, and eternal life that no one else can.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

Scripture presents how Jesus is unique from any other religious leader. He is the only founder of a world religion who is still alive, having risen from the dead (Matthew 28:6; 1 Corinthians 15:1-8). Also, unlike other religious leaders, Jesus is fully divine and fully human. Jesus uniquely fulfilled numerous, specific Old Testament prophecies, more than three hundred by some scholars’ count (Isaiah 53; Psalm 22). He is also set apart from other religious leaders because of His miracles. The New Testament records at least thirty-five, but John indicated that Jesus did many more (John 21:25). Jesus is also unique in His power over nature, such as walking on water (Matthew 14:22-33) and calming a storm (Luke 8:24-25). Jesus’ teachings, which He conveyed in parables, prophecies, and poetry (e.g., Matthew 5) also separate Him from other religious leaders (Matthew 7:29). Our Lord is the Lord, the only One who can offer hope to a lost and dying world.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

Everyone wants to make their mark. Some try doing it through their careers. Others write books. Still others invest in their family, hoping their children and grandchildren carry on their legacy.

But no one has made a mark like Jesus. Though early followers were often persecuted or put to death for their beliefs, Christianity spread with unstoppable power; within three hundred years of Christ’s death, Christianity grew from our Lord and His few followers to become the religion of the Roman Empire. According to Pew Research Center, more than two billion people today claim to be Christian. Following His teachings, Christians have been a force for good in the world, including starting hospitals, schools, and orphanages, among other works (Matthew 25:35-40).

But many people throughout history have done good deeds for others. None of them were God, though. None of them performed the signs that Jesus did. And none of them can offer us eternal life. Christians today should resist attempts that present Jesus as just one of many religious leaders. We must tell the world that Jesus is the “name that is above every name” (Philippians 2:9).
