Is Jesus Christ unique? How?

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

Jesus Christ is completely unique in who He is and what He has done. He is God’s only Son, sent to bring salvation by taking on humanity and fully revealing God in human form (John 3:16; 1:1–3, 14; Hebrews 1:3). Existing before Abraham, He could rightly use God’s name as His own because He is God and eternal (John 8:58). Through Him, all things were created and are sustained, making Him both Creator and Sustainer (Colossians 1:16–17).

Not only is Jesus unique as God, but He is also the only way to salvation and the sole mediator between God and humanity (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; 1 Timothy 2:5). He forgives sins with divine authority and is the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world (Mark 2:5–7; John 1:29). He laid down His life and took it up again, rising bodily and living forever as Lord (John 10:17–18; Luke 24:39; Revelation 1:17–18).

Because Jesus is unique, Scripture was only able to record a small part of what He did (John 21:25). No one is like the God-Man, and that’s why He has no equal—He is completely unique.

FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT

• The Old Testament prepared for a unique figure who would bring God’s salvation and reign. Promises of a seed to defeat evil (Genesis 3:15), a Son of David with an everlasting throne (2 Samuel 7:12–16), and titles like “Mighty God” and “Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6–7) pointed to someone special—both a king and priest who would suffer for sin (Isaiah 53:4–12; Psalm 110:1, 4). These themes together built the expectation of an unmatched individual who would embody God’s presence, authority, and forgiveness.

FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT

• The New Testament states that Jesus is the unique individual the Old Testament anticipated. His uniqueness stems from the fact that He is fully God and fully man, perfectly righteous, and the only One capable of providing salvation. While no list can fully capture His uniqueness, here are some key points:
• Jesus is the only Son of God. We read, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). The Father has only one Son, and that is Jesus. Giving Him for salvation was a costly move on God’s part. Jesus is one of a kind because He is the only Son of God.
• Being the Son of God also means that Jesus is God. John wrote, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). However, “though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:6–7). The eternal Son of God added humanity. He became like us in every way, yet He remained unique because He is also fully God. Though human, Jesus still made claims that only God can make. For example, He said, “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). By saying “I am,” He was alluding to the name the Lord gave Himself when talking to Moses in Exodus 3:14. So, Jesus was unique, being the only God-Man.
• Being the God-Man means that Jesus, alone, is the perfect human. The author of Hebrews said, “we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus is unique in that He is the only human in history who was able to live without sinning even once.
• When the author of Hebrews said He is a “high priest,” he was talking about Jesus’ saving work. In the Old Testament, the Israelites needed to regularly offer sacrifices to temporarily have their sins forgiven. Hebrews was showing how Jesus was the better sacrifice. Being perfect, He could sacrifice Himself for the sins of the world. When He came, John the Baptist announced, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). Since no one else is perfect, no one else could be our sacrifice. This is why Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Jesus is unique because He, alone, reconciles men and women to God.
• To achieve salvation, Jesus needed to die. However, being fully God, He also raised Himself from the dead. He said, “I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again” (John 10:17–18). He died according to His timetable and then raised Himself back up. After rising, He showed His flesh-and-bone body to the disciples, proving a real, physical resurrection (Luke 24:39; Romans 1:4). He would later say, “I died, and behold I am alive forevermore” (Revelation 1:18). Jesus is unique because He has authority even over His own death and life.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

It is because Jesus is the unique God-Man that God can provide salvation. There is no other way to Him except through Jesus. Therefore, to reject Jesus is to reject God (John 5:23). Because Jesus is perfect, when He died, He died as a sacrifice for sinful men and women. Such a sacrifice demands a response. First, you must admit that what you do is sinful, repent, and acknowledge you are unable to save yourself. Second, you must believe in who Jesus is. It is not enough to simply believe things about Him (like, “He was a good man”). Instead, you must believe everything about Him, especially what makes Him a unique Savior. This includes His uniqueness as both fully God and fully man. Third, you are called to turn away from your sin and follow Him.

When you do, then the Father who sent Jesus will gladly welcome you as His son or daughter, counting you as righteous—not because you are, but because Jesus is. The result is eternal life with the promise to dwell with God forever.
