Should Christians watch television (TV)?
Quick answer
Television can positively impact our lives when we engage with it wisely, but it is essential to evaluate how and what we watch against biblical truth.
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
Television did not exist when the Bible was written, so it is not specifically addressed. However, the Bible provides us with principles regarding our time and entertainment to help us discern if we should watch television— both what to watch and how much to watch. We are called to spend our time wisely, avoid laziness, and use discernment both on what and how much we watch. In Psalm 90:12, we are encouraged to “number our days” so that “we may get a heart of wisdom.” Time is precious, and we should not waste it indulging in a lazy lifestyle that so often accompanies watching exorbitant amounts of television (Proverbs 26:13-16). Instead, we should use discernment in both how much time we watch TV as well as what we watch (Proverbs 1:10–19; 4:14–19).
In the New Testament, we learn about the importance of guarding our time and minds. Matthew 5:16 makes it clear that a Christian’s focus needs to be directed toward shining God’s light in the world, while Romans 12:2 reminds us that we should not conform to the world and its ways. Our time is short on this earth, and we should use it to honor God (Ephesians 5:15-16) rather than let worldly TV influences corrupt our godly morals (1 Corinthians 15:33) or our TV choices set a bad example for others (1 Peter 1:16). Ultimately, we should strive to have Christ-centered thinking, and we can do this by directing our focus on the things mentioned in Philippians 4:8.
FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
-
Psalm 90:12 makes it clear that we should use our time wisely: “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” To spend large amounts of time watching TV rather than investing in our relationship with God or obeying His Word is a foolish decision. We should count every moment as precious.
-
Proverbs 26:13-16 reminds us to be diligent in our lives rather than indulge in laziness. Many people nowadays are tempted to spend unhealthy amounts of time in front of a screen (TV or laptop). We should not put off what is important to simply be comfortable.
-
We should use careful discernment in what we choose to let influence our minds and behavior (Proverbs 1:10–19; 4:14–19).
FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT
-
As Christ-followers, we must “let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). We need to be careful that the time we are spending watching TV is not deterring us from doing “good deeds.”
-
We should not be “conforming” to the world through the influence of TV or anything/anyone else: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2).
-
In 1 Corinthians 15:33, Paul says: “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.’" In a sense, when we watch worldly TV that portrays sin as normal, we are hanging around “bad company.” We must be diligent to not let any influence corrupt our godly morals.
-
We are to honor God with all areas of our lives, including our time: "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil,” (Ephesians 5:15-16). Since we are called to shine Christ’s light in the world, we should actively find ways to do so. However, if most of our time is being spent watching TV, our time to do this will be greatly diminished.
-
In Philippians 4:8, the Apostle Paul clearly tells us what we should focus our thoughts on: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” If our TV choices are not directing our focus on the things in this verse, we would do well to cut them out of our lives.
-
How we handle our TV consumption is also setting an example for others. If our favorite television shows are extremely violent or vulgar, what kind of example is that to those we seek to influence for Christ? Instead, we are called to live holy lives (1 Peter 1:16)
IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY
Watching television can have a positive impact on our life if we are wise about how we engage with it. The number of Christian television programs around the world is greater than any time in history. However, even with Christian programs, we must evaluate each program to determine whether the teachings are actually biblical. Many TV shows can also offer helpful teaching illustrations. For example, when teaching about perseverance, a reference to a professional athlete whose story has been made popular on television can add to the impact of a Bible study or sermon.
Television can also offer a way for Christians to use their gifts and abilities, as some are very talented in acting, production, or video editing. Watching television can be a communal activity, bringing people together, especially when we don’t just mindlessly consume watching TV. Television can provide opportunities to have conversations and to enjoy activities or experience some entertainment together. In summary, television is a means of communication that can be used for good or evil. We must consider the time we spend on television, the content we watch, its impact on our spiritual lives, and our example to others.
