WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

The Bible is the unified story of God revealing Himself to humanity. He is the Creator, Redeemer, and King who made all things (Genesis 1–2; Psalm 24:1–2). Humanity was created in His image to know Him and reflect His rule, but when Adam distrusted and disobeyed God, sin entered the world and brought death and separation from Him (Genesis 1:26–28; 3; Romans 5:12). Yet from the beginning God promised a coming Deliverer who would crush evil and restore what sin had broken (Genesis 3:15). Throughout the Old Testament, God revealed His holy, faithful, and merciful character while pointing forward to the coming Messiah (Exodus 34:6–7; Isaiah 53; Jeremiah 31:31–34). The New Testament reveals that Jesus is that promised fulfillment. Fully God, fully man, Jesus took on flesh to perfectly reveal God and accomplish redemption through His life, death, and resurrection (John 1:14; Romans 3:24–26). Through Christ, God began restoring His people by His Spirit and forming the church to proclaim His kingdom until He returns (Acts 2; Matthew 28:18–20). The Bible ends with the promise of complete restoration, where God will dwell with His people forever in a renewed creation free from sin, death, and sorrow (Revelation 21–22).

FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT

• The Bible is God's Word, which reveals who He is and how He has worked in the world since its creation. In understanding this, we grow to understand who we are, God's plan for us, and how we are to live in light of who He is. The Bible begins by revealing God as the eternal Creator who made the heavens, the earth, and everything in them. Creation displays His power, wisdom, goodness, and authority over all things (Genesis 1–2; Psalm 19:1–4; Psalm 24:1–2). Humanity was created in God's image to know Him, represent Him, and rule over creation under His authority (Genesis 1:26–28; 2:15–17).
• The entrance of sin through Adam and Eve brought death, separation from God, and the corruption of creation, introducing humanity's greatest problem: sin (Genesis 3; Romans 5:12).
• Yet even in humanity's rebellion, God promised a coming Deliverer who would ultimately defeat evil and restore what sin had broken (Genesis 3:15). God promised redemption and restoration. 
  
• Throughout the Old Testament, God revealed His character as holy, just, merciful, faithful, loving, patient, and sovereign through His covenant relationship with His people, the people of Israel, whom He created for His divine purposes (Genesis 12:1–3; Exodus 34:6–7; Deuteronomy 7:9; Psalm 103:8–13; Isaiah 6:1–5).
• God's covenant with Abraham shows His plan to bless all nations through one chosen family, pointing forward to the coming Messiah (Genesis 12:1–3; 15:1–6; 22:18). This was in accordance with His promise to bring a Deliverer.
• Israel's history demonstrates both God's faithfulness and humanity's repeated rebellion. The Law reveals God's holiness, exposes sin, and shows humanity's need for redemption (Exodus 19–20; Deuteronomy 30:15–20).
• The sacrificial system, priesthood, tabernacle, temple, and festivals were all given to Israel to point to God's greater plan of salvation (Leviticus 16; Hebrews 10:1).
  
• The prophets continually called God's people to repentance while announcing the coming King, the suffering Servant, the new covenant, and the future restoration of all things (Isaiah 53; Jeremiah 31:31–34; Ezekiel 36:25–27; Daniel 7:13–14; Micah 5:2).
  
• The Old Testament ends with anticipation, leaving readers waiting for God to fulfill His promises through the Messiah (Malachi 3:1; 4:2–6).

FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT

• The New Testament reveals that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the entire Old Testament story, accomplishing everything God promised from the beginning (Luke 24:27, 44–47; Matthew 5:17).
• Jesus perfectly revealed the Father, showing God's character through His life, teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection (John 1:1–18; 14:9; Colossians 1:15–20).
  
• Jesus willingly died on the cross and bore the punishment for sin, accomplishing redemption for all who trust in Him (Romans 3:21–26; 5:6–11; 1 Peter 3:18). Jesus' resurrection defeated sin and death, securing eternal life and beginning God's new creation (1 Corinthians 15:20–28; Romans 6:4–11).
• Through the Holy Spirit, God now dwells within His people, transforming them into the likeness of Christ and empowering them to live for Him (John 14:16–17, 26; Acts 2; Romans 8:1–17).
  
• The church (those who trust in Jesus for salvation) exists to proclaim the gospel to every nation, pointing people to God and calling them to live for God's kingdom until Christ returns (Matthew 28:18–20; Acts 1:8).
• The New Testament teaches that history is moving toward Christ's return, when He will judge evil, fully establish His kingdom, and make all things new, like He promised (1 Corinthians 15:24–28; Revelation 19–22).
• The Bible concludes with the restoration of creation, where God will dwell forever with His redeemed people in a new heaven and new earth, free from sin, death, sorrow, and suffering (Revelation 21–22). Those who reject Him will face eternal condemnation (Revelation 20:11–15; 21:8; Matthew 25:46). God's Word tells us who He is, how He has worked in the world, and what will come so we don't have to face eternity apart from Him (2 Peter 3:9).

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

The Bible is far more than a collection of inspiring stories or ancient history. It is God's revelation of Himself. Through its pages, we discover who God is, what He has done, what He is doing, and what He has promised to do. Every page invites us to know Him more deeply, trust Him more fully, and worship Him more wholeheartedly.

What a gift that we don't have to wonder what God is like or guess at His plan for the world. He has spoken. He has preserved His Word so we can know Him, understand and respond to the gospel, and live with confidence and hope in Him both now and for eternity. Countless believers throughout history longed for the privilege of having God's complete written revelation, and today, many people around the world still risk everything just to own a Bible.

So don't let your Bible collect dust on a shelf. Open it. Read it. Meditate on it. Treasure it. The God who created you has chosen to reveal Himself through His Word, and there is no greater privilege than hearing His voice, believing what He says, and allowing His truth to shape every part of your life.
