Can AI possess moral responsibility or who holds accountability?

TL;DR

AI cannot be morally responsible because it has no will, conscience, or ability to discern right from wrong. Any harm AI causes ultimately traces back to the humans who create and use it.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

Moral responsibility in the Bible is the foundational principle that individuals are accountable to God for their actions, choices, and moral conduct. Human accountability arises from being created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Moral responsibility is grounded in divine commandments. Four examples include the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1–17); Micah's call to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly (Micah 6:8); Jesus' commandment to love God and one's neighbor (Matthew 22:37–40); and the final judgment, when everyone stands before Christ to have their actions, good or bad, evaluated (2 Corinthians 5:10).

Artificial intelligence (AI) is based on statistical patterns and programmed instructions rather than autonomous moral choice. AI lacks the free will and self-awareness necessary to be held accountable for its actions. Moral responsibility for AI belongs to the humans who design, deploy, and use these systems.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

Current AI systems cannot possess moral responsibility. AI lacks the fundamental capacities required for moral agency, including consciousness, intentionality, emotional understanding, and the ability to reflect on moral principles.

AI ethics is a new field that establishes moral principles and guidelines to ensure AI systems are developed and deployed safely, fairly, and responsibly. Yet the AI system itself does not hold moral responsibility. Rather, accountability is always traced back to the humans who design, deploy, and use AI. This can be compared to medical imaging tools: if a machine misses a diagnosis, the operator is blamed, not the device.

When using AI, we need to pay attention to the disclaimer at the bottom of the content: "AI-generated information may not always be complete or free from bias. Please verify critical details before relying on them."
