Can AI possess moral responsibility or who holds accountability?
TL;DR
AI cannot be morally responsible because it has no will, conscience, or ability to discern right from wrong. Any harm AI causes ultimately traces back to the humans who create and use it.
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
Moral responsibility in the Bible is the foundational principle that individuals are accountable to God for their actions, choices, and moral conduct. Human accountability arises from being created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Moral responsibility is grounded in divine commandments. Four examples include the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1–17); Micah's call to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly (Micah 6:8); Jesus' commandment to love God and one's neighbor (Matthew 22:37–40); and the final judgment, when everyone stands before Christ to have their actions, good or bad, evaluated (2 Corinthians 5:10).
Artificial intelligence (AI) is based on statistical patterns and programmed instructions rather than autonomous moral choice. AI lacks the free will and self-awareness necessary to be held accountable for its actions. Moral responsibility for AI belongs to the humans who design, deploy, and use these systems.
FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
- Being made in God's image (Genesis 1:27) means humans are to reflect God's character and attributes, including moral responsibility. An AI algorithm cannot relate to God.
- The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17) summarize God's moral law. AI does not know right from wrong, nor does AI know the truth.
- Micah 6:8 highlights the "good" moral and ethical standards by which humans can live a life pleasing to God. AI ethical standards are being developed by governments to guide the moral conduct of AI development and use. These standards declare that humans are accountable for and oversee AI.
FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT
- Jesus summarized the Old Testament by saying humans should love God and their neighbor (Matthew 22:37-40). Because AI lacks consciousness, it cannot genuinely feel or express love.
- Humans are responsible for their actions and personally accountable to God (2 Corinthians 5:10). AI is neither responsible nor accountable for its decisions and actions.
IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY
Current AI systems cannot possess moral responsibility. AI lacks the fundamental capacities required for moral agency, including consciousness, intentionality, emotional understanding, and the ability to reflect on moral principles.
AI ethics is a new field that establishes moral principles and guidelines to ensure AI systems are developed and deployed safely, fairly, and responsibly. Yet the AI system itself does not hold moral responsibility. Rather, accountability is always traced back to the humans who design, deploy, and use AI. This can be compared to medical imaging tools: if a machine misses a diagnosis, the operator is blamed, not the device.
When using AI, we need to pay attention to the disclaimer at the bottom of the content: "AI-generated information may not always be complete or free from bias. Please verify critical details before relying on them."
UNDERSTAND
- Human moral responsibility is grounded in biblical commands, and humans are accountable to God for their choices and actions.
- AI systems are based on statistical algorithms that lack the fundamental capacities to be morally responsible.
- When AI causes harm, accountability always traces back to humans.
REFLECT
- How much advice should you take from an AI system that cannot be held legally or morally responsible for its content?
- What encourages or challenges you about the lack of moral responsibility that AI has but the moral responsibility that humans possess?
- How do you seek to discern when it is wise to use AI and when it is better to avoid AI?
ENGAGE
- What does it mean to be made in the image of God, and what does that mean for moral responsibility?
- In what ways can relying on AI help or hinder our ability to practice biblical wisdom like justice, mercy, and discernment?
- As more technology invades our lives, what practical steps can we take to protect our humanity and relationship with God?
