What is Nibiru?

Nibiru is the name of a large object that is allegedly going to crash into our planet in the future to destroy all life. Nibiru has sometimes been connected with the Mayan calendar "reset" concept in 2012 or the Wormwood mentioned in Revelation 8:10-11.

A look at the biblical prediction called Wormwood, however, reveals a much different event than that associated with Nibiru. Revelation 8:10-11 says, "The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter."

A couple of observations are clear from a close look at these verses. First, the earth will not be completely destroyed. Instead, "many people died from the water" that will be poisoned by this falling object.

Second, it is uncertain from this vision whether Wormwood is a literal object. While it could refer to an object falling from space, the result that it fell on "a third of the rivers and on the springs of water" could also refer to some kind of environmental judgment that pollutes the fresh waters of the world. This view is also strengthened by the fact that the second angel in Revelation 8:8-9 describes another falling object that destroys a third of the living creatures in the sea (likely referring to salt water). In either case, the object called Wormwood will not destroy the entire planet.

Scientifically, the idea of Nibiru is also problematic. While astronomers sometimes report concerning meteors or objects that will be close to the earth, there are no reports of a massive meteor-like object that will destroy the planet in the near future. The concept of Nibiru instead more closely resembles the folklore or mythology of various religious views throughout history that have failed to come true.

In contrast with the view of Nibiru, the Bible offers a supernatural and positive end to the earth. The world will not be destroyed by another object, but will be recreated by God into a new heaven and new earth. Revelation 21—22 describe a future world where God will live with His people forever in a new and perfect world under His leadership, a glorious conclusion that far exceeds the doomsday predictions of Nibiru.
