What does it mean that God is the Creator?

God has always existed. He was not created, for He has always been. When God spoke to Moses from the burning bush, He described Himself in this way: "I AM WHO I AM" (Exodus 3:14). God created the heavens and earth, the entire universe, out of nothing. Isaiah says, "the LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth" (Isaiah 40:28). All three persons of the Godhead were involved in the creation (Genesis 1:2; Acts 17:24; Hebrews 1:2; Colossians 1:16).

When we think of a "creator," we think of a person who is making new things out of raw materials. People "create" many things—art, sculpture, buildings, musical compositions—but these creations are made out of preexisting materials. God is the ultimate creator, because He created everything that exists, including the raw materials used by creators today. He made the universe out of nothing (Genesis 1:2; Colossians 1:16). People create, but God is the Creator.

God created the universe with His voice. Everything from light itself, to planets and stars, to the mountains and the seas, to plants and animals—God spoke them into existence (Genesis 1). When God created man, He fashioned him out of the earth, a special method of creation: "the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature" (Genesis 2:7). Woman was fashioned by God from the man's rib (Genesis 2:18–23). Mankind is unique among creation, because they were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).

As humans, God designed us a step above the rest of creation. He has given us an eternal spirit. He created us with intellect, a conscience, and individual free will. Therefore, we have the ability to have a personal relationship with Him, which is what He desires to have with us (Jeremiah 29:12; James 4:8; Revelation 3:20). When Jesus, God incarnate, came to earth for our salvation, He was in the form of a man (Philippians 2:5–8; Luke 1:35).

God is the one and only true Creator. Satan is only able to pervert what God creates. People are only able to create with things that have already been created. All things find their origin in God (Jeremiah 10:16; James 1:17; Revelation 10:6). Because of this, everything ultimately belongs to God (Exodus 19:5; Psalm 50:12). As humans, we are a creation of God and we belong to Him, too. Since He created us with free will, we may choose to have a relationship with Him or to reject Him. Our choice will not be without consequences, whether good or bad. If we are wise, we will submit ourselves willingly to our Creator, for He is the only One who knows the intricacies of how we were made (Psalm 78:39; 103:14; Romans 9:20).
