what does the bible say?
Sin is not conquered by human determination alone but by the transforming power of God working through His Word, His Spirit, and His people (Galatians 5:16; 2 Timothy 3:16). Sin is ultimately a heart problem that comes out in sinful thoughts and actions. We must, therefore, fill our heart with what is true, pure, and pleasing to God (Colossians 3:2; Philippians 4:8; Matthew 5:28). Doing so helps guard against temptation and equips us to walk in righteousness (Psalm 119:11; John 17:17). God has also given us a family of believers who can provide encouragement, accountability, and wisdom in the fight against sin (Proverbs 27:17). This means we must first admit our sin, through confession and repentance rather than hiding or excusing wrongdoing (Proverbs 28:13; 1 John 1:9). Temptation can be resisted because God faithfully provides a way of escape and the strength to endure (James 4:7; 1 Corinthians 10:13). Our ultimate victory over sin, therefore, comes through surrender to the Holy Spirit, who produces Christlike character and transforms us from the inside out (Galatians 5:22–24). As we grow in our faith, we won't become sinless, but we will sin less.
