What are some lessons from the Book of 2 Timothy?
Redemption The Bible New Testament

TL;DR:

Second Timothy teaches of the importance of godly mentors and of God's word. The book also teaches believers to expect hostility to the truth, persecution for devotion to Christ, but also God's eternal rewards for faithfulness.

from the old testament

  • The lessons of 2 Timothy are found elsewhere in Scripture, including the Old Testament. For instance, the influence Timothy's mother and grandmother had on his spiritual development proves the truth of Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."
  • Second Timothy's emphasis on the importance of knowing God's word echoes Old Testament passages like Deuteronomy 6:6–7 and Joshua 1:8.
  • Paul's warnings to Timothy to avoid foolish arguments are similar to the cautions issued in Proverbs 20:3 and 26:4.
  • In 2 Timothy, Paul had told Timothy to expect a time when people would want to hear the lies of false teachers rather than the truth. This was also true of the ancient Israelites. Through the prophet Isaiah, God referred to them as "rebellious people, lying children, children unwilling to hear the instruction of the Lord; who say to the seers, 'Do not see,' and to the prophets, 'Do not prophesy to us what is right; speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions" (Isaiah 30:9-10).
  • Many faithful servants of God in the Old Testament, such as Joseph, Jeremiah, and Daniel, (Genesis 39:20, Jeremiah 38:6, Daniel 6:10-16) exemplified the truth expressed in 2 Timothy that believers should expect persecution.

from the new testament

  • Paul mentions the positive spiritual influence Timothy's mother and grandmother had on him (2 Timothy 1:5), which shows that believers are a living testimony to others, especially children.
  • The book of 2 Timothy also teaches that knowing God's word is vital to our lives (2:15; 3:16-17), and familiarity with it helps us to help others (2:2, 4:2).
  • Paul warns Timothy not to become embroiled in arguments that have no purpose but to stir up strife (2:16, 23-24).
  • Another lesson from 2 Timothy is that, sadly, people would often rather satisfy their "itching ears" with lies than to hear the truth, and because of that, they seek out teachers who will tell them what they want to hear (4:3).
  • A harsh lesson from 2 Timothy is that faithful believers should expect persecution (3:12). But with that hard message comes the promise that our suffering has a purpose (1:8) and, ultimately, a reward (4:6-8).

implications for today

People are watching you.

Those people could be antagonists of Christianity who are looking for you to slip-up and confirm their biases. But they could also be your own child, neice, nephew, or young person in the church whom your actions influence, even if not consciously. One lesson from 2 Timothy is that our actions matter because of how they impact others. Timothy had some good role models in his mother, grandmother, and Paul.

What do your actions communicate to younger people around you? Do they show the importance you place on Scripture? What do they say about how you value the gospel?

We all "mentor" someone, consciously or not. May our influence on others give glory to God!
