what does the bible say?
Paul wrote 2 Timothy to "his beloved child" in the faith, Timothy (2 Timothy 1:2). Several lessons from that letter stand out, lessons that are found in other parts of Scripture, including the Old Testament. Paul links Timothy's faith to the faith of his mother and grandmother, which conveys the importance of being a good role model for young people (2 Timothy 1:5; cf. Proverbs 22:6). Other lessons from the letter include the importance of reading and reflecting on God's word (2 Timothy 3:16-17; cf. Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Joshua 1:8) and avoiding wasting time and effort on foolish arguments (2 Timothy 2:16, 23-24; cf. Proverbs 20:3, 26:4). A sober truth for believers presented in 2 Timothy is that persecution will come (3:12), a lesson exemplified in the Old Testament by the trials of of such figures as Joseph, Jeremiah, and Daniel (Genesis 39:20, Jeremiah 38:6, Daniel 6:10-16). But believers today can be encouraged by the hopeful message in 2 Timothy that God has prepared an eternal reward for the faithful (2 Timothy 4:6-8).
