When Jesus prayed in John 17:3, He stated that eternal life is knowing the one true God and the Son whom He sent. Knowing Jesus means far more than recognizing His name—it’s entering into a living, personal relationship with the Savior who loves and redeems us (John 10:14-15; Revelation 3:20). Jesus invites us not just to learn about Him but to walk with Him through faith, prayer, and obedience (John 14:15, 15:4; 1 John 2:6). When we believe that Jesus died and rose again for our sins, we are welcomed into God’s family and given eternal life (John 1:12, 3:16). This relationship transforms us from the inside out, as His Spirit teaches us, comforts us, and molds us to reflect His character (2 Corinthians 3:18, 5:17; Galatians 5:22-23). To truly know Jesus is to experience His grace, live in His truth, and find lasting purpose in His presence.
To know Christ personally means developing a relationship with Him. To do that, you spend time with Him and have vulnerable conversations. Talking regularly is an important part of a relationship. To know Jesus is not just to read about Him educationally, but also to spend time understanding who He is. First John 5:20 says, "And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life." We should pray for understanding so we can know Jesus and, consequently, know God.
Knowing Christ is also about relinquishing control from yourself to Him. We can’t control everything in life—but God can and does. When we think we are in control, we may think that our salvation depends on us, but it doesn’t. It depends solely on the grace of God when we place our faith in Christ.
If you believe that Jesus is who He said He is and want to accept His offer to be your Savior, you can pray something like this: "Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and apart from you deserve only judgment. I believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son who came to earth to live the perfect life that I couldn't. He died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sin. Then He rose again after three days, proving He is true, and offering salvation and eternal life to all who put their faith in Him. Please forgive me for my sins and help me live for you. I want to know Jesus personally. Thank you for accepting me and giving me eternal life."
