What do angels do?

from the old testament

• Angels exist first and foremost to glorify and serve God. In Isaiah’s vision of God’s heavenly throne room, the seraphim continually proclaim, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts” (Isaiah 6:3).
• Psalm 103:20–21 describes angels as mighty beings who “do his word” and obey His commands. Angels submit to God’s authority. Their greatness comes not from themselves but from the One they serve.
• One of the most common roles of angels in Scripture is communicating God’s messages to people. For example, the angel of the LORD appeared to Hagar and revealed God’s promise concerning her son Ishmael (Genesis 16:7–12). The angel Gabriel appeared to Daniel to give him understanding concerning future events and God’s purposes (Daniel 8:15–19; 9:20–23).
• Angels also protect and assist God's people. When Elisha and his servant were surrounded by the enemy, God opened the servant’s eyes to see that “the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire” (2 Kings 6:17), revealing the unseen heavenly army protecting them. Psalm 91:11 teaches that God commands His angels to “to guard you in all your ways.” While this does not mean believers are free from suffering, angels care for God's people according to His purposes.
  
• Angels also serve as instruments of God’s justice. When Israel was judged because of David’s sin, the angel of the LORD brought judgment upon the nation until God commanded him to stop (2 Samuel 24:15–17). In the Exodus account, God used His heavenly power to bring judgment against Egypt (Exodus 12:23).
  
• Angels also do other things that help God in His plan of salvation. For example, cherubim guarded the entrance to Eden after humanity’s fall (Genesis 3:24), reminding people that sin had separated them from God’s presence. The tabernacle and temple included images of cherubim, symbolizing God’s heavenly throne and His dwelling among His people (Exodus 25:18–22).

• The New Testament reveals angels playing a significant role in the arrival of Jesus, the promised Messiah. The angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would give birth to Jesus, the Son of God (Luke 1:26–35). An angel announced Jesus’ birth to the shepherds, proclaiming, “good news of great joy” because the Savior had been born (Luke 2:10–11). At Jesus’ birth, a multitude of angels praised God, declaring, “Glory to God in the highest” (Luke 2:13–14). Angels recognized that Christ’s coming was the fulfillment of God’s plan of redemption.
• Throughout Jesus’ earthly ministry, angels ministered to Him. After Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, angels came and ministered to Him (Matthew 4:11). During His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, an angel strengthened Him (Luke 22:43). When Jesus was arrested, He said that He could ask the Father for “more than twelve legions of angels” if He desired (Matthew 26:53), showing His authority over the heavenly armies.
• An angel rolled away the stone from Jesus’ tomb and announced to the women, “He is not here, for he has risen” (Matthew 28:5–6). Angels testified that Jesus had defeated death and that God’s promises had been fulfilled.
• Hebrews 1:14 describes angels as “ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation.” God uses angels as servants to accomplish His purposes for believers. Angels also protected and assisted believers in the early church. An angel rescued Peter from prison (Acts 12:6–11).
• Angels worship Jesus because He is greater than all created beings. Hebrews 1:6 commands, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” In Revelation, angels surround God’s throne and worship the Lamb, Jesus Christ, declaring His worthiness and glory (Revelation 5:11–12).
  
• Angels will play a role when Jesus returns, and God brings final judgment and restoration. Jesus said that He will return “with all his angels” in glory (Matthew 25:31). Angels will also accompany Christ, gather His people, and participate in the final defeat of evil (Matthew 13:39–42; Revelation 20:1–3).

implications for today

The Bible’s teaching about angels is not meant to make us fascinated with angels themselves but to deepen our awe of the God they serve. Angels are powerful, but they are still created beings whose purpose is to worship God and carry out His will.

We, too, as believers, are called to have the same posture of humble surrender. Just as angels do not seek their own glory but faithfully point all attention back to God, our lives should reflect a desire to honor Him above ourselves. True purpose is found not in making much of ourselves but in faithfully serving the One who created us.

Angels also remind us that God is always working, even when we cannot see it. When life feels uncertain, prayers seem unanswered, or God’s plan feels unclear, the Bible assures us that His purposes are never delayed or defeated. He is always at work, and what the Bible records about angels reminds us of this.

Just as angels faithfully serve God, so we are called to do the same. Like the angels, we get to share in God's plans and purposes. How amazing that the spiritual realm and earthly realm are both under the authority of the same sovereign God. While both angels and believers have a unique role in His plan, only believers have the privilege of experiencing God's plan of salvation. May we make much of Him!
