Is Song of Solomon an allegory?

The language of the book focuses on the relationship between the man and the woman that leads to marriage, showing that God created romantic love and intimacy as good gifts to be enjoyed within His design for marriage (Genesis 2:24–25).
  
• Song of Solomon also emphasizes that love is not merely a feeling but a faithful commitment. The bride and groom’s relationship is marked by covenant faithfulness (Song of Solomon 6:3; 8:6–7). Because of these themes, many Jewish and Christian interpreters have read Song of Solomon as an allegory of God’s love for His people. However, Song of Solomon itself does not clearly state that the man and woman represent God and Israel, nor does it explain that each detail has a hidden spiritual meaning. • The New Testament helps us see that the Song of Solomon need not be forced into an allegory to have spiritual significance. The book celebrates the goodness of human love while pointing us toward the ultimate Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, whose faithful and sacrificial love fulfills every longing of the human heart (Ephesians 3:17–19; Revelation 19:7–9).

We live in a world obsessed with love stories—the perfect relationship, the perfect wedding, the perfect person who will finally make us feel complete. But Song of Solomon reminds us that even the best human love story is only a glimpse of a greater love story. The love between the bride and groom is beautiful, and that gives us great inspiration for our own romantic relationships. At the same time, it points beyond itself to the faithful, covenant love of God.

Song of Solomon doesn't need to be an allegory to challenge us to stop settling for the world’s shallow definition of love. Love is not simply a feeling that comes and goes, a relationship status, or a search for someone who fulfills all our desires. God’s design for love is deeper—it is built on commitment, faithfulness, sacrifice, and a love that chooses someone again and again.

Whether you are single, dating, or married, Song of Solomon invites you to see love as God intended it to be. Romantic love is a gift from God, yet we often make the gift more important than the Giver. When we look to relationships for what only God can provide, we will always be left wanting. But when we root our lives in the love of God, we are freed to love others in a way that is selfless, faithful, and lasting.

So, is Song of Solomon an allegory? No, it is not primarily a symbolic story where every detail represents something else, but it does point us toward a greater reality. It reveals God's good purpose for romantic love while also using that love to point to the faithful, pursuing, covenant love of God—a love ultimately revealed through Jesus Christ. Song of Solomon reminds us that our love stories are best written by God, the One who first loved us and who teaches us what true love looks like.
