Is the Mormon Church the true church of Jesus?

TL;DR:

The Mormon Church claims to be the one true church, but its origins, added scriptures, and doctrines directly contradict the Bible. When measured against Scripture, the movement founded by Joseph Smith proclaims a different god, a different gospel, and therefore cannot be the true church of Jesus Christ.

from the old testament

  • The true biblically-sound church must teach there is only one God (Isaiah 43:10; Isaiah 44:6; Isaiah 44:8). Mormons teach a plurality of gods.

from the new testament

  • Jesus established His church with the coming of the Holy Spirit; it has never been overcome but has existed on the earth throughout all generations since Jesus (Matthew 16:18; Ephesians 3:21). Mormons teach that the Book of Mormon is the restored or complete gospel brought by Jesus Himself to the Americas. There is no biblical support for this teaching, and no archaeological, genetic, or linguistic evidence that the tribes from the Book of Mormon have ever been in America.
  • Any true church must base its doctrine on what the Bible teaches (2 Timothy 3:16–17, 2 Peter 1:21, Psalm 12:6).The first page of the Book of Mormon states, "Another Testament of Jesus Christ" was brought secretly to Joseph Smith by the angel Moroni. Galatians 1:6-9 says, "I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed."
  • The Bible teaches that God is Spirit and does not have a physical body (John 4:24, Luke 24:39, 1 Kings 8:27, John 1:18, 1 Timothy 1:17). Mormons teach that God had a body and actually had sex with Mary to conceive Jesus.
  • A biblical church must teach that the eternal, fully divine person of Jesus took on a human nature when He came to Earth (Philippians 2:5–8, John 1:14). In Mormon theology, Jesus is the spiritual brother of all humanity, including Lucifer.
  • The true church teaches placing our faith in Christ's work on the cross is all we need in order to be saved to eternal life with God (Acts 16:30–31, John 6:28–29, 1 John 5:11–12). Mormons teach that we should trust Jesus and do our part in salvation.
  • The Bible strictly warns believers not to add to or take away from the Scriptures, and that not one word will pass away (Revelation 22:18-19; Matthew 5:18). The Mormons say their teachings have restored the true, flawed biblical teaching.

implications for today

The Book of Mormon is not the only book used by the Latter-Day Saints; they hold teachings of their prophets and apostles as more important than the "restored gospel." The Doctrines and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price are the books which guide the daily life of the Mormon. These teachings often contradict themselves and the Book of Mormon itself.

Joseph Smith even rewrote the Bible to suit his own beliefs making 2,427 changes or additions; however, the Mormons don't talk about or use his translation. He even inserted himself in the book of Genesis chapter 50: "And that seer will I bless, and they that seek to destroy him shall be confounded; for this promise I give unto you, for I will remember you from generation to generation; and his name shall be called Joseph, and it shall be like unto you, for the thing which the Lord shall bring forth by His hand shall bring my people unto salvation."

The true church established by Jesus does not follow any human leader as do the cult religions. As such, Mormonism does not pass the truth test because it has rewritten Scripture to fit Smith's beliefs, and to fit the teachings of their own prophets. We should always compare the Bible with the teachings of cults and religions in order to determine validity.

Joseph Smith reveals a pattern of reshaping Scripture rather than submitting to it. Therefore his movement was not the true church, even though it claims to be. In contrast, the true church established by Jesus Christ is built on God’s unchanging Word, not on evolving revelations or human authority. When a movement must continually revise Scripture to validate its claims, it exposes that it is not restoring Christ’s church—but replacing it with something entirely different.

understand

  • Mormonism adds scriptures and revelations that contradict the Bible.
  • Mormonism's doctrines teach multiple gods, a created Jesus, and works-based salvation, opposing biblical truth
  • Joseph Smith altered the Bible and elevated human authority, showing it is not Christ’s true church.

reflect

  • How confident are you in knowing the core truths of the Bible to recognize teachings that contradict it?
  • When confronted with claims of a “restored gospel,” how do you discern between Scripture and human additions?
  • How does understanding the true foundation of Jesus’ church shape your own faith and practice?

engage

  • Why is it important to examine both the origins and teachings of a religious movement when evaluating its truthfulness?
  • Why is it important that we understand the various conflicting definitions of biblical terms used by the Mormons?
  • Why is it problematic that the Mormon church elevates additional books and prophets as being equal to or above the Bible?
