From the beginning, the Bible reveals a God who wants to be near His people, not distant or uninvolved (Deuteronomy 4:7; Psalm 34:18). He hears when we call, meets us in our pain, and promises that those who seek Him will find Him (Psalm 145:18; Jeremiah 29:13). God’s nearness became unmistakable in Jesus, Immanuel—“God with us”—who entered our world and came near to us in the flesh (Matthew 1:23; John 1:14). Even now, God is not far away; the Holy Spirit dwells within believers, and Jesus promises, “I am with you always” (John 14:16–17; 1 Corinthians 6:19; Matthew 28:20). Our circumstances and feelings may change, but God’s presence and love do not—nothing can separate us from Him (Romans 8:38–39). Because God is near, we don’t have to run from Him when life gets hard; we can bring Him our fears, questions, pain, and confusion and draw near to Him in faith (Philippians 4:6–7; James 4:8). The God of Scripture is not a distant God we are trying to reach—He is the God who is always near to His people.
God is near, even when you don’t feel like He is. When you go through hard things and life feels lonely, confusing, or overwhelming, it can be easy to assume God has stepped back. But the Bible tells a different story: He is near to the brokenhearted, He hears when you call, and He promises never to leave you or forsake you.
So, come to Him. If He feels far, it's not because He has moved. He is near. Talk to Him. Bring Him your questions, fears, frustrations, and pain, and trust that He hears you (Psalm 62:8; Philippians 4:6–7). Draw near to God, because He is already near to you (James 4:8). It's not like a friend who will pull away when things get hard or disappear when you need them most. God doesn’t back away from your mess; He meets you in it. When you feel alone, remind yourself of what is true: you are not facing whatever comes next by yourself. God is near.
And if God is near, that should change how you live. You can pray instead of panic, seek Him instead of running from Him, and trust Him even when you cannot see what He is doing. Look for His presence in the ordinary moments of your day, and make space to listen to Him by reading the Bible and praying, and letting silence be the place of surrender. When you feel alone, remind yourself of what is true rather than letting your feelings have the final word. You are not walking through life trying to get God's attention—He is already near, and He invites you to draw near to Him.
And while you're at it, bring that encouragement to others. There are so many people who are lonely or feel alone, and sometimes what they need is a reminder that they are not forgotten. Be the person who checks in, listens, prays with them, sits with them in the hard stuff, and points them back to God, who is always near. You may not be able to fix what they are going through, but you can remind them that they don’t have to walk through it alone. Because when we know that God is near, we can be people who help others experience that nearness.
