There is a real spiritual battle around us, but this battle is not fought with human strength, rituals, or dramatic confrontations with demonic forces. The Bible shows that God’s people face opposition, difficulties, sin, and other challenges and that these things often have a spiritual component. However, God has overcome the evil forces of darkness, and He fights on our behalf. Believers are called to stand firm against evil. We can do this through prayer, living righteous lives, having faith, and knowing and upholding the Word of God (Ephesians 6:10–18; James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8–9). We are called to rely on the Holy Spirit rather than our own power. True spiritual battle is about resisting evil, discerning truth, and trusting God’s authority over darkness, not attempting to control or command spiritual forces. God’s power sustains His people, and He calls us to trust Him rather than seek sensational or human-centered methods. Believers can live confident lives, knowing that the One who defeated darkness works in believers to overcome evil.
Do you ever wonder what is happening in the spiritual realm when you deal with difficulty, sin, strife, or other challenges? The Bible teaches that there is a real, unseen spiritual battle taking place around us, where forces of evil seek to oppose God’s purposes and influence our hearts and minds. Oftentimes, there is a spiritual component going on to whatever we are facing, and this is something we cannot see.
Still, God has not left us defenseless—He equips us with prayer, His Word, righteousness, and the power of the Holy Spirit to stand firm and resist temptation and attacks. When difficulties come and they do not make sense, when they continue despite your best efforts to live for God and take care of problems, when sin is involved in another person’s response to or hatred toward you, you can be sure that there is something more going on.
God is the One who sees, knows, and has the power to overcome any spiritual battle. He is the One we must abide in and trust at all times but especially when we realize that we are in a spiritual battle. Some charismatic churches or denominations sometimes portray spiritual battle as a dramatic, confrontational fight against visible manifestations of demons, using rituals, shouting, or aggressive “exorcisms” as if humans can force Satan to obey them. These approaches are not biblical and can mislead believers into focusing on sensational experiences. Instead, engaging in spiritual battle looks like trusting God, studying and upholding Scripture, and relying on the Spirit’s powerful work in resisting evil. The same power that raised Christ from the dead and declares defeat upon the spiritual forces of darkness is the same power that lives in believers. May we not be afraid but trust in Him, who has won the battle.
