TL;DR:

A Bible scholar is someone who has dedicated his or her life to understanding Scripture, both for the glory of God and the building up of His church. All believers should be students of the Bible so we can know the truth, apply it to our lives, and share it with others.

from the old testament

  • God emphasizes the importance of keeping His commandments in daily life and teaching them to future generations (Deuteronomy 6:6-9).
  • In Joshua 1:8, God instructs Joshua to meditate on His Word continually and to live according to it.
  • Psalm 1:1-2 highlights the blessing of delighting in and meditating on God's Word.
  • Psalm 119:11 says: "I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you."
  • Ezra committed himself to studying, practicing, and teaching God's Law, demonstrating that true engagement with Scripture requires personal application and the sharing of its teachings with others (Ezra 7:10).
  • In Nehemiah 8:13, the leaders gathered together to study the law with Ezra, showing the value of communal learning and the responsibility of leaders to seek a deeper understanding of Scripture.

from the new testament

  • Paul encouraged Timothy to diligently study the word and correctly handle and apply God’s Word (2 Timothy 2:15).
  • Colossians 3:16 urges believers to let the Word dwell richly and guide our interactions with others.

implications for today

All Scripture is valuable to us in our walk with Christ and the more we study it, the better (2 Timothy 3:16–17; Matthew 4:4), but it is not enough to just study the Bible. The most important part of studying the Bible is that we allow it to transform us more into the image of God (James 1:22–25). The Bible helps us to know God by showing us who He is and what He has done: "For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope" (Romans 15:4). The point of becoming a scholar of God's Word is not to acquire academic knowledge, but to know God more. He is our Creator and our Savior. The Bible does not give us that which is truly life, but it points us to the One who does—Jesus (John 1:4; 10:10). It's hard to know God and true life in Him if we do not study His Word.

understand

  • A Bible scholar dedicates his or her life to studying Scripture deeply.
  • A true Bible scholar not only learns but applies God's Word to his or her life.
  • The ultimate goal of a Bible scholar is to know God more intimately and to point others to Him.

reflect

  • What is the importance of studying God’s Word deeply?
  • How do you apply what you learn from the Bible to your life?
  • How is your Bible studying impacting your interactions with others and the way you are applying what you learn to your life?

engage

  • Academic biblical scholars seek to understand the historical, cultural, and linguistic contexts of Scripture. While formal education can help us study the Bible, all believers can read God’s Word, understand what it is saying, and apply it with the help of the Holy Spirit, who illuminates truth. Commitment to learning, application, and sharing the insights gained from studying the Bible are the most important parts of being a biblical scholar.
  • What is the importance of each believer seeing themselves as a biblical scholar, and what implications does that have on the way we treat and respond to God’s Word?
  • How does studying Scripture influence the way we navigate life's challenges and decisions?
